"It is simple pleb-math!" Borg scoffed. "If Borg trades you one Bit-Stone for another Bit-Stone, they are exactly the same. They are interchangeable. That is fungible. But this Cross-Eyed Monkey Rock? It is totally unique! It has a cryptographic receipt on the Rock-Chain proving it is the only one in the world! It is non-fungible!"

Thok walked over. He looked at Borg’s rock. Then, Thok picked up a blank rock from the ground, grabbed a piece of charcoal, and in three seconds, perfectly copied the cross-eyed monkey drawing.

Thok held up his new rock. It looked absolutely identical.

"Thok just right-hand-traced it," Thok grunted. "Now Thok has one too. Did Thok just make fifty Bit-Stones?"

Borg’s face turned bright red. "NO! You don't get it, Thok! You just forged the JPEG! The Joint Prehistoric Engraved Graphic! You don't own the cryptographic receipt on the ledger! The network knows Borg's monkey is the official monkey!"

"But Thok's monkey look exactly same," Thok pointed out, holding the rock up to his eye. "Thok's monkey also cross-eyed. Thok can look at monkey whenever Thok want."

"BUT YOU DON'T OWN THE UNDERLYING BLOCKCHAIN METADATA!" Borg shrieked, clutching his rock defensively. "And because Borg owns the metadata, Borg gets exclusive access to the Cross-Eyed Monkey Cave Club!"

Lom and Zog immediately perked up. "Exclusive club?" Lom asked.

"Yes!" Slik the real estate broker emerged from the shadows. He was wearing an absolutely absurd hat made out of a hollowed-out gourd. "Only those who hold a Monkey Rock may enter the VIP section of the valley. And look at the traits! Borg's monkey is smoking a stick! But Zog... Zog, I have a Monkey Rock where the monkey has laser eyes. It is mathematically rarer."

"Zog wants the laser eyes!" Zog yelled, throwing a stack of Ledger Nano Rocks at Slik. "Take all my life savings!"

Within three days, the entire valley was trading ugly rock drawings. They stopped hunting. They stopped gathering. They just sat in a circle, flipping JPEGs to each other at increasingly astronomical prices.

Grug watched a trader trade a perfectly good, custom-built canoe for a drawing of a pixelated punk-rocker penguin.

"They are buying artificial scarcity of ugly art," Grug whispered in horror. "The medium is decentralized, but the asset is utterly useless."

But Slik the broker wasn't done. Having successfully financialized crude art, he moved on to the ultimate grift.

Slik gathered the tribe at the edge of the valley, pointing out toward a massive, uninhabitable, completely barren sinkhole filled with sharp rocks and stagnant mud.

"Welcome, visionaries," Slik announced, gesturing to the mud pit, "to the Meta-Valley!"

Borg looked at the mud. "It is a hole, Slik. There are no caves. There are no mammoths. It smells like sulfur."

"Ah, Borg, you are thinking in the physical realm!" Slik laughed patronizingly. "The physical realm is for boomers! The Meta-Valley is digital land. You aren't buying the mud. You are buying the conceptual coordinates of the mud on the Rock-Chain!"

Slik held up a grid drawn on a giant leaf.

"If you buy a plot in the Meta-Valley," Slik pitched, his voice dripping with hype, "you can close your eyes, drink this special fermented mushroom juice, and imagine that you have a massive luxury cave right there in the mud! And because your ownership is recorded on the blockchain, everyone else who drinks the mushroom juice has to imagine your luxury cave too!"

"Whoa," Lom whispered, his mind blown. "Lom can have a waterfall in the Meta-Valley?"

"You can have two waterfalls!" Slik cheered. "And best of all, you can put your Monkey Rock on the imaginary wall of your imaginary cave, and charge other people Bit-Stones to imagine looking at it!"

Grug stepped forward, his face a mask of pure disbelief.

"Slik. You are selling them literal nothing," Grug said flatly. "You are selling them empty space inside a collective hallucination, and pricing it in hard cryptographic money."

"I'm selling them the Future of Web3, Grug," Slik sneered. "Location, location, location. And right now, the plot of imaginary land next to Borg's imaginary mansion is going for three hundred Bit-Stones. Snooze, you lose."

"LOM BUYS THE MUD!" Lom screamed, mortgaging his actual, physical fish stand to buy a completely empty, conceptual square of sulfur-smelling dirt.

The peak of the Bull Market was a sight to behold.

It started raining a freezing, miserable drizzle later that afternoon. Grug and Thok walked past the Meta-Valley sinkhole.

Borg, Lom, and Zog were standing waist-deep in the freezing mud. They were all holding their ugly Monkey Rocks. Their eyes were squeezed tightly shut. They were shivering violently.

"Hey Borg," Lom chattered, his teeth clicking. "Lom is coming over to your Meta-Cave to look at your monkey."

"Welcome, Lom!" Borg yelled, standing perfectly still in a puddle. "Wipe your imaginary feet! Look at my beautiful imaginary chandelier!"

Grug stopped at the edge of the pit. He looked at the richest men in the valley, voluntarily standing in a freezing swamp, absolutely convinced they were living in luxury because a ledger told them so.

"Thok," Grug said quietly.

"Yes, Grug?"

"The bubble has expanded beyond finance. It has infected their reality consensus." Grug shook his head. "They have locked all of their actual, hard-earned Bit-Stones into Slik's 'Meta-Valley' Smart Contract to hold these plots of imaginary land."

Grug pulled out his white leaf and looked at the underlying code of Slik's Smart Contract. He traced the logic with his charcoal. He frowned. He traced it again.

His eyes widened.

"Thok," Grug whispered, a cold sweat breaking out on his forehead. "Slik didn't hire a security auditor for this contract. He copy-pasted the code from a deprecated berry-farming protocol."

"What mean?" Thok asked, lifting his hammer.

"It means there is a re-entrancy vulnerability in the Meta-Valley," Grug said, his voice dropping to a terrified hush. "The code has a backdoor. A massive one."

Grug looked at the tree line. Standing in the shadows, watching Borg and Lom shiver in the mud, was a mysterious figure wearing a dark hood, typing furiously onto a piece of bark.

"And I think," Grug said, pointing at the hooded figure, "the hackers just found it."

Part 50: The Smart Contract Hack and Code is Law

The hooded figure moved toward the Meta-Valley Smart Contract with terrifying, algorithmic precision.

Slik the broker had built the Smart Contract to act as the central treasury for his digital real estate empire. It was a massive, incredibly complex contraption of bamboo chutes, swinging coconuts, and counterweights. Whenever a trader bought or sold a plot of imaginary mud, they dropped their Bit-Stones into the top funnel.

Currently, the bamboo treasury held a staggering fifty thousand Bit-Stones—the life savings of every degenerate standing in the freezing swamp.

Grug grabbed Thok’s arm. "Watch the mechanism, Thok. Slik programmed the withdrawal function in the wrong order."
