Gideon, bleeding from a half-dozen high-caliber impacts that had compromised his heavy ballistic armor, stood like a shattered monolith in the crossfire. The tactical chief was unleashing a continuous, deafening wall of suppressed 9mm fire, holding back eight of Malta’s elite operatives. But he was fighting a losing battle of geometric attrition. They were flanking him, moving through the strobe-lit red darkness of the klaxons.
"Burn the hub!" Commander de Molay roared, his voice cutting through the mechanical shriek of the klaxons and the gunfire.
De Molay didn't take cover. Driven by the fanatical realization that his empire was currently being overwritten by a Canary Wharf analyst, the rogue Commander marched directly into Gideon’s line of fire. He raised his heavy automatic shotgun and fired.

The heavy slug caught Gideon in the right shoulder, violently spinning the giant around. Gideon crashed to the concrete, his submachine gun skittering away into the darkness.
OVERWRITE PROGRESS: 64%
Elias watched the progress bar out of the corner of his eye. He couldn't let go of the Node. If he broke physical contact before the genesis block fully integrated, Baphomet would instantly reject the corrupted data packet and re-establish De Molay’s hard fork.
De Molay racked the shotgun, stepping over Gideon’s prone body. The rogue Commander marched toward the maintenance hatch, his slate-grey eyes locked onto the glowing golden light of the Node.

"You think a piece of glass makes you the architect?" De Molay snarled, closing the distance to twenty feet. "I built the Malta command! I held the fiat system together while Alistair sat in his mountain reading philosophy! You are nothing but a rogue variable, boy."
Elias didn't look at the shotgun leveled at his chest. He looked at the terminal.
OVERWRITE PROGRESS: 88%
"I'm the margin call," Elias whispered, drawing his suppressed 9mm with his left hand while keeping his right hand clamped to the Node.
De Molay raised the shotgun to his shoulder. "Then pay the margin."

Elias fired three times. Firing off-handed, his aim was erratic. Two rounds sparked harmlessly against the steel casing of the radome. The third clipped De Molay’s collarbone, staggering him, but the massive Commander didn't drop.
De Molay roared in pain and squeezed the trigger of the shotgun.
Elias threw his upper body backward, pressing his spine flat against the curved steel of the radome. The blast of buckshot pulverized the concrete inches from his knee, spraying him with razor-sharp shrapnel. A piece of the shredded concrete sliced deep into Elias's cheek, blinding him in his left eye with his own blood.

He gripped the Node harder. The obsidian block was searing hot, burning the scarred tissue of his palm.
OVERWRITE PROGRESS: 96%
De Molay racked the shotgun again, closing to within ten feet. The remaining Malta operatives had moved up to flank him, their assault rifles raised, waiting for the execution.
"End of the line, Knight Vance," De Molay spat, blood pouring down the front of his tactical vest.

Elias looked up at the towering, scarred Commander. Through the blood and the pain, a terrifying, absolute calm settled over the young quant. He didn't see a man holding a shotgun anymore. He saw a massive, over-leveraged short position that was about to be forcibly liquidated.
OVERWRITE PROGRESS: 100%
CONSENSUS OVERWRITE COMPLETE.
WELCOME, GRAND MASTER VANCE.
The golden light of the Genesis Node suddenly flashed blindingly white, sending a visible, electrostatic shockwave through the fiber-optic cables.

Inside the subterranean servers of the Malta command, Baphomet rebooted. The Liquidity DDOS manufactured by the Hashashin was instantly purged from the AI’s buffers. The localized routing algorithms, previously locked to De Molay’s biometrics, were violently overwritten by the Genesis Block.
Baphomet realized, with absolute deterministic logic, that Commander de Molay was no longer a recognized node. He was a rogue actor. He was an enemy of the Ledger.
Above Elias’s head, the massive, automated sentry turrets—previously frozen by the bandwidth choke—suddenly whirred to life. Their servos screamed as they snapped downward, their thermal optics no longer painting Elias, but locking directly onto the twelve heavy thermal blooms standing on the concrete.

De Molay heard the servos whine. He looked up at the heavy machine guns tracking him.
The slate-grey eyes widened, the absolute horror of the mathematical inversion finally crashing down upon him. He didn't control the Cathedral anymore. He was standing in its crosshairs.
"Execution Protocol: Malta," Elias commanded, his voice cold and flat, picked up by the radome's localized audio sensors.
The turrets opened fire.

It was a localized extinction event. The heavy-caliber rounds tore into the concrete plateau with deafening, absolute fury. The Malta operatives didn't even have time to scream. They were vaporized in a hail of depleted uranium, their ballistic armor utterly useless against the sheer kinetic output of the automated defenses.
De Molay was thrown backward, his chest torn apart by a sustained burst. His shotgun flew from his hands, clattering over the edge of the Dingli Cliffs and disappearing into the freezing Mediterranean three hundred feet below.
The turrets fired for exactly three seconds before their algorithms confirmed zero remaining hostile life signs on the plateau.

The guns spun back to their neutral positions, returning to their silent, sweeping algorithms.
The silence that followed was heavier than the gunfire. The red klaxons spun down, the blinding lights returning to a pale, sterile white.
Elias let his hand fall from the Genesis Node. The device had cooled, returning to a matte-black block of obsidian. The command prompt on the server screen was calm, awaiting its next instruction.
Elias wiped the blood from his blinded eye. He stood up slowly, his legs trembling violently. He holstered his empty 9mm and walked over the shattered concrete toward the center of the plateau.
