"Sorry, Borg," Lom sighed, pulling the trout back. "If Lom accepts a purple leaf, the Chief's Smart-Guards will automatically seize Lom's fishing pole. You have to eat the moss."
Borg fell to his knees in the slush, weeping. The C-Coin was perfectly stable, but it was the stability of a prison cell. The traders had traded their financial freedom for the illusion of safety, and the result was algorithmic serfdom.
Meanwhile, deep inside Grug’s warm, secure cave, Thok was hard at work.
Thok sat cross-legged by the fire, sweat pouring down his muscular back. He was furiously calculating SHA-256 hashes in his head, mentally mining the decentralized Bit-Stone network that had kept ticking quietly in the background all winter.
"Eighty-four thousand!" Thok grunted, his eyes squeezed shut. "Add the pebbles! Multiply by arm hair! Hash found!"
Thok grabbed his white leaf to record the block reward. But as he wrote the number down, he stopped. He stared at the leaf. He scratched his head. He looked at Grug, who was polishing an obsidian hardware wallet.

"Grug," Thok said, his voice rumbling with confusion and rising anger. "The math is broken."
"The math never breaks, Thok," Grug replied calmly without looking up. "What's wrong?"
"Thok did the work. Thok expended massive calories. But network only gave Thok twenty-five Bit-Stones. Reward is supposed to be fifty!" Thok stood up, grabbing his club. "Did Ugg hack the network? Did the Chief tax Thok's brain?!"
Grug smiled. He set down the obsidian rock and walked over to Thok.
"No one hacked the network, Thok. You have just experienced a pre-programmed macroeconomic event," Grug explained, pointing to the Genesis Block rules written on the cave wall. "It is called The Halving."
"Why network cut Thok's pay in half?!"

"It didn't cut your pay; it cut the inflation rate," Grug corrected. "Every four winters, the algorithm automatically reduces the issuance of new Bit-Stones by exactly fifty percent. It ensures absolute scarcity. It means your previously mined Bit-Stones just became exponentially harder to replace."
Thok processed this. The gears in his head, highly trained from months of hashing, clicked into place. "If Bit-Stones are twice as hard to make... then Thok will not sell them for cheap anymore. Thok's math is premium math now."
"Exactly," Grug nodded.
Suddenly, a loud, terrifying roar echoed from outside.
Grug and Thok peeked out of their cave. The massive Cave Bear, which had been hibernating in the ruins of the FTU exchange all winter, had finally woken up. The bear stretched, sniffed the warm spring air, and lumbered out of the valley, heading back up into the high mountains.
The Bear had left the market.

Down on Cave Street, Borg and Lom watched the bear leave. Then, they looked at the purple, expired C-Coins in their hands. They looked at the oppressive Chief's guards.
"Lom cannot take this anymore," Lom whispered, crushing the surveillance leaf in his fist. "Lom wants his financial sovereignty back. Lom wants an asset that the Chief cannot turn purple."
"Borg wants the math-rocks," Borg agreed, his eyes widening with a familiar, degenerate gleam. "Borg doesn't care about the volatility anymore. Volatility is the price of freedom!"
The two cavemen sprinted up the hill to Grug's cave. A crowd of fed-up retail traders quickly followed them.
"Grug! Thok!" Borg yelled, bursting into the cave. "We are ready! We reject the C-Coin! We want to buy Bit-Stones! Name your price, Thok! Borg will give you ten mammoth steaks for fifty Bit-Stones, just like the old days!"

Thok, fully aware of the supply shock that had just occurred ten minutes ago, crossed his massive arms. He looked down at Borg with the absolute leverage of a primary producer in a supply-constrained market.
"No," Thok grunted.
"No?" Borg gasped. "But that is the historical price!"
"Historical price irrelevant," Thok declared, tapping his temple. "The Halving just happened. Thok’s brain has to work twice as hard for half the math. Thok's supply is slashed. If Borg wants one Bit-Stone, the price is not ten steaks. The price is... one hundred steaks."
The entire cave went dead silent.
"One hundred?!" Lom shrieked. "That is a ten-x markup!"
"Take it or leave it," Thok shrugged, sitting back down to hash another block. "Supply is mathematically fixed. Demand is up to you."

Borg looked at Lom. He looked at the Chief’s guards marching in the valley below. Then, the most powerful psychological force in the history of economics took hold of Borg’s soul: FOMO. Fear Of Missing Out.
"If Thok won't sell for ten, and the supply is halved, the price is going to infinity!" Borg screamed, his pupils dilating. "BORG WILL PAY ONE HUNDRED STEAKS! BORG IS BUYING THE TOP!"
Borg sprinted out of the cave to go leverage his entire family's hunting output for a fraction of a Bit-Stone.
The news of The Halving spread through the valley like wildfire. The moment the retail crowd realized the supply of new coins had been aggressively choked off, a massive liquidity vortex formed. Traders dumped their C-Coins, their shells, and their pinecones, desperately bidding up the price of the mathematically scarce asset.
Down on Cave Street, the fat-torch charts were dragged out of storage and re-lit.

WHOOSH.
A massive, towering green flame shot into the sky. The first green candle of the new cycle.
"WE ARE SO BACK!" Zog roared, dancing around the fire.
Grug walked down to the trading floor, carrying a large basket of his Ledger Nano Rocks.
"Alright, listen to me!" Grug shouted over the euphoric roar of the new Bull Market. "I am distributing hardware wallets! We do not keep our Bit-Stones with third parties! We do not write our passwords on bark near goats! We practice strict operational security!"
Lom bought a Nano Rock and immediately carved his Seed Phrase into it, hiding it safely under a massive boulder. "Lom is his own bank! And Lom is a responsible bank!"

Grug smiled. They had survived the leverage collapse, the fraud, the Ice Age, and the surveillance state. They had learned the hard lessons. The ecosystem was finally maturing into a robust, decentralized, self-sovereign economy.
Just then, Borg strutted onto the trading floor.
He was wearing a brand new, absurdly long cape made entirely of rare, imported neon-pink flamingo feathers. He was carrying a small, incredibly ugly rock with a crude picture of a cross-eyed monkey painted on it.
"Hey guys!" Borg shouted, holding up the ugly monkey rock. "Slik the real estate broker just told Borg about a brand new Layer-1 protocol! It's called Non-Fungible Tokens! Borg just paid fifty Bit-Stones for this picture of a monkey! Slik says it's going to flip the market cap of gold!"

Grug’s smile instantly evaporated. He stared at the monkey rock. He stared at the flamingo cape.
The Bull Market was back, and with it, the absolute peak of human degeneracy had returned. The cycle wasn't maturing; it was just finding entirely new ways to be stupid.
"Here we go again, Thok," Grug sighed, rubbing his bruised forehead.
Thok hefted his Slashing Hammer, looking at the ugly monkey rock with deep suspicion. "Thok smash monkey?"
"Not yet, Thok," Grug muttered, watching the green candles burn brighter and higher. "Let them have their fun. The Bear always comes back."

Part 49: The NFT Craze and Digital Land
The bull market had completely detached from physical reality.
Borg strutted up and down Cave Street, his neon-pink flamingo cape dragging in the mud, holding up his incredibly ugly rock. The crude charcoal drawing of the cross-eyed monkey stared blankly at the crowd.
"Gather round, plebeians!" Borg shouted. "Borg is now a member of the cultural elite! Borg owns an N-F-R! A Non-Fungible Rock!"
Grug rubbed his temples. He was sitting on his boulder, trying to finalize the code for a decentralized lending protocol, but the sheer volume of Borg’s stupidity was distracting.
"Borg," Grug sighed. "Explain to me what 'Non-Fungible' means."
