The lead agent didn't look at Morrel. His eyes swept the crowd, locking onto the young man in the midnight-blue tuxedo.
"Edmond Dantès," the agent said, his voice cutting through the salty air like a margin call alarm.
Edmond stepped in front of Mercédès, his heart hammering against his ribs. The pure, unjaded world he had inhabited just seconds ago shattered into a million fragmented data points.

"I am Edmond Dantès," he said, trying to keep his voice steady. "What’s the problem?"
Two agents closed the distance instantly. One grabbed Edmond’s arm, twisting it behind his back with practiced brutality, while the other reached into his jacket pocket and seized his phone—the physical key to his two-factor authentication, his firm’s servers, and his entire life.

"Edmond Dantès, you are being detained under the Patriot Act and Title 18, Section 2339C of the United States Code," the lead agent recited, the metallic click of handcuffs snapping shut echoing across the silent deck.
Mercédès screamed, lunging forward, but Morrel caught her, holding her back from the federal agents. "Edmond! Edmond, what is happening?" she cried, tears instantly ruining her makeup.

"It’s a mistake!" Edmond shouted back, struggling against the cuffs as they dragged him toward the gangway. "Morrel, call compliance! Tell them there’s been a routing error! Mercédès, I swear, it’s a mistake! I’ll be back tonight!"
"On what charge?" Morrel bellowed, his authority returning as he blocked the gangway. "You can't drag my Head of Trading off this ship without telling me the charge!"

The lead agent paused, looking at the stunned billionaires and quants shivering in the cool sea breeze.
"Wire fraud, violation of international sanctions, and the material financing of global terrorism," the agent stated coldly.

A collective gasp swept through the crowd.
Danglars stood perfectly still in the shadows, sipping the last of his champagne. Beside him, Fernand exhaled a long, shuddering breath, the tension leaving his body as he watched Edmond being forced down into the tactical boat.

The white floodlights clicked off, plunging the Pharaon back into the dim harbor shadows. Edmond Dantès was gone, swallowed by the dark water and the crushing machinery of the state, leaving only the sound of Mercédès weeping on the deck.

Chapter 4: The Audit
The interrogation room in the basement of the J. Edgar Hoover Building was a sensory deprivation chamber of brushed steel, fluorescent lighting, and acoustic dampening foam. Edmond sat alone at the bolted table, still wearing his midnight-blue tuxedo. The handcuffs dug violently into his wrists. For three hours, he had stared at the two-way mirror, running every algorithmic permutation of the night’s events through his mind.
He was mathematically certain this was a systemic error. The market always had anomalies; you just had to wait for the reconciliation phase.

The heavy steel door clicked open. Gérard de Villefort stepped into the room.
At thirty-four, the Deputy Director of Enforcement for the CFTC was a man sculpted for high office. He wore a Tom Ford suit that cost more than Edmond’s first car, and his silver-streaked hair was styled with predatory perfection. Villefort had been pulled from his own engagement dinner in Georgetown—he was marrying the daughter of the Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee—and he radiated the quiet, lethal irritation of a man whose ascension had been momentarily delayed.

He placed a thin manila folder and a digital tablet on the steel table. He did not sit.
"Edmond Dantès," Villefort said, his voice smooth and frictionless. "Twenty-two. Head of Proprietary Trading at Morrel Capital as of this morning. And tonight, the subject of a joint-agency terrorism task force."
"It’s a routing error," Edmond said immediately, his voice hoarse. "I'm a quantitative analyst, Director. I build execution algorithms. Whatever triggered your Anti-Money Laundering tripwires, it was a false positive. Look at my trading logs. I have zero exposure to sanctioned entities."
