Sitting near the edge of the trading floor was the valley's three-legged goat, chewing on something. The goat looked at Borg. A tiny corner of birch bark was sticking out of its mouth. On that corner, Borg could just barely make out the word: 'banana'. The seventh word of his Seed Phrase.

The goat swallowed.

Borg let out a sound that transcended human language. It was a guttural, soul-rending shriek of pure, concentrated financial agony.

He dove at the goat. He grabbed it by the neck. "COUGH IT UP!" Borg screamed, shaking the animal violently. "SPIT OUT THE MATH! SPIT OUT BORG'S CAVE!"

The goat simply bleated and licked Borg's nose. The digestive enzymes of a Pleistocene goat operate at roughly a pH of 2. The birch bark, and the cryptography written on it, were already dissolving into goat-cud.

Borg dropped to his knees in the mud, sobbing hysterically. He crawled over to Grug's boulder and clawed at Grug's ankles.

"Grug!" Borg wept. "Please! Call Customer Service! Reset Borg's password! Send a password recovery eagle! Do something!"

Grug looked down at Borg with a mixture of pity and cold, mathematical detachment.

"There is no Customer Service, Borg," Grug said softly. "There is no password reset. There is no 'Forgot My Seed Phrase' button."

"But they are my Bit-Stones! Everyone knows they are mine!"

"The network does not care what everyone knows," Grug explained, holding up the immutable ledger. "The network only cares about cryptographic proof. If you do not have the keys, you cannot move the stones. Not your keys, not your coins."

"But... but the Chief!" Borg pleaded. "The Chief bailed out Ugg! The Chief can bail out Borg! Make the Chief print more!"

"That is the beauty and the horror of hard money," Grug sighed. "I built this system specifically so the Chief couldn't alter it. It is immune to political bailouts. When you chose to be your own bank, Borg, you took on all the responsibilities of a bank. And you just let a goat eat your vault."

Slik the real estate broker rolled his eyes. "No stones, no cave. Get out of the mud, Borg. You're ruining the property value."

Borg collapsed in a heap of wilting blue flowers, utterly ruined. He was a man dying of thirst while staring at an ocean of his own inaccessible wealth.

The trading floor went dead silent as the sheer brutality of self-custody sank in.

Then, Lom started doing the math.

Lom looked at his own leaf. "Wait a minute," Lom whispered. "If Borg can never, ever move those fifty Bit-Stones... they are permanently locked on the ledger forever."

"Correct," Grug nodded. "They are essentially burned."

"But there are only ever going to be twenty-one million," Lom said, his voice rising with excitement. "And Borg just permanently removed fifty of them from the circulating supply!"

Thok, who was still dual-wielding chisels and sweating profusely to mine fractions of a coin, suddenly stopped.

"Supply go down?" Thok grunted.

"Demand stay same," Zog shouted.

"PRICE GO UP!" the entire trading floor roared in unison.

The value of the remaining Bit-Stones instantly skyrocketed. Thok's newly mined coins were suddenly worth twice as much. Lom's fractional holdings spiked.

Borg’s tragic incompetence had acted as a massive deflationary dividend for everyone else in the valley. They weren't mourning Borg's loss; they were actively celebrating his stupidity.

"Thank you for your sacrifice, Borg!" Lom cheered, doing a little dance. "Your goat has made us all incredibly wealthy!"

Grug watched the traders cheer, realizing that the system was working exactly as intended. It was ruthless, unforgiving, and perfectly sound. But as he watched Borg trying to pry the goat's mouth open with a stick, Grug knew the retail crowd couldn't handle the psychological stress of raw self-custody.

They needed a way to store their Seed Phrases that couldn't be eaten, burned, or lost in the mud. They needed a cold storage solution. But more importantly, the sheer terror of self-custody had opened the door for a very old, very dangerous idea to return.

A loud, grinding noise echoed across the valley.

The massive boulder sealing Ugg's vault slowly rolled open. The giant Market Maker stepped out, squinting in the sunlight, wearing a fresh, clean tunic and a brand new business model.

Part 45: The Centralized Exchange (FTX Cave)

Ugg the Market Maker stepped out of his sealed vault, but he was a fundamentally changed giant.

He was no longer wearing his intimidating Market Maker furs. Instead, he was dressed in an oversized, faded tunic and ill-fitting, primitive cargo shorts. His hair was a wild, uncombed frizzy halo. He was staring blankly ahead, rapidly clicking two small pebbles together in a rhythmic pattern, completely ignoring eye contact.

He didn't look like a financial titan. He looked like a distracted, harmless genius.

Borg, still weeping in the mud over his goat-digested Seed Phrase, looked up.

"Ugg?" Borg sniffled. "You came back to lend us sticks?"

"Sticks are fiat garbage," Ugg mumbled rapidly, still clicking his pebbles. "I'm here to talk about the future. I'm here to talk about User Experience."

Ugg walked past Borg and gestured to a newly excavated, incredibly smooth, brightly lit cave entrance next to his old vault. He had painted the letters FTU over the door in bright blue berry juice.

"First Tribal Ugg-xchange," Ugg announced, finally looking at the crowd. "Grug gave you Bit-Stones. The tech is great. But Grug’s user experience is terrible. Self-custody is a nightmare. You have to do math. You have to hide bark. You have to fight goats."

Lom and Zog nodded furiously. The fear of the goat was still fresh in their minds.

"At FTU," Ugg continued, his voice adopting a soothing, disarming pitch, "we believe in a new mantra: Not your keys, not your problem."

The crowd gasped. It was exactly what they wanted to hear. They wanted the massive upside of Grug's decentralized math-money, but with the warm, comforting hand-holding of a centralized bank.

"You send your Bit-Stones to the FTU vault," Ugg explained, pointing to a perfectly polished limestone wall inside the new cave. "In exchange, I paint your balance on this beautiful, smooth wall. Look how smooth it is. If you forget your password, I don't care. I just look at the wall. It’s a Centralized Exchange. We custody the assets so you don't have to."
