The crowd stared at their blank leaves. A currency with absolute scarcity, zero physical weight, no central authority, and perfectly transparent rules. It was alien. It was beautiful.
"Let us boot the network," Grug said softly.
He sat down in the dirt, closed his eyes, and began doing furious mental arithmetic to solve the very first riddle. Sweat beaded on his forehead. Veins bulged in his neck. The crowd watched in silence as Grug’s brain executed the first cryptographic hash.
Suddenly, Grug’s eyes snapped open.

"Seventy-three!" Grug shouted.
"Hash verified!" Thok grunted, having somehow done the math in his head slightly slower.
"I have mined Block Zero," Grug announced proudly. "The Genesis Block."
He took his charcoal and drew the very first transaction on his leaf. But he didn't just record the creation of the first fifty Bit-Stones. He wrote a permanent, immutable message in the margins of the Genesis Block, forever mocking the centralized failure that birthed it:
The Chief is on the brink of second bailout for Market Maker.
"The network is live," Grug whispered.

Instantly, Thok sat down, closed his eyes, and started trying to mine Block One.
"One!" Thok yelled. "Two! Three! Four!" Thok was executing a brute-force attack on the algorithm. He was guessing numbers as fast as he could.
"I need meat!" Thok roared, grabbing a mammoth steak and shoving it into his mouth without chewing. "Brain need power! Hash rate dropping!"
Thok was consuming massive amounts of physical energy—literally eating half the valley's meat supply—just to fuel the brain-power required to guess the math puzzles. He was a biological ASIC miner.
Within an hour, Thok had successfully mined Block One. He was awarded fifty Bit-Stones.

"Thok is rich in math!" Thok cheered, holding up his leaf with the number '50' written on it.
Borg rushed over to Thok. "Thok! I will give you a premium spear for one Bit-Stone!"
"Wait," Lom interrupted, squinting at the invisible currency. "What does Borg want with a Bit-Stone? It does nothing. It is just a number on a leaf."
"Borg wants it because it is the only thing in this valley that Ugg cannot steal, the Chief cannot inflate, and Borg cannot physically lose in a fire!" Borg yelled. "It is perfect, sovereign wealth! I am buying the math!"

Thok agreed. He announced the transaction to the network. Grug, Borg, Lom, and everyone else recorded it on their leaves simultaneously. The network reached consensus. The transaction was immutable.
Cave Street had crossed the digital rubicon.
For the first time in history, two cavemen had exchanged pure, unadulterated value across space and time without a single physical object changing hands, and without a giant man sitting in a vault taking a cut.

Grug looked down at his leaf, watching the decentralized nodes propagate the transactions. He had finally built a system that protected the people from the rulers.
But as the price of a single Bit-Stone began to rise from one spear to ten spears, a new, uniquely digital danger emerged.
Borg had recorded his private access password—his "Seed Phrase"—on a small piece of bark. And Borg, being Borg, was currently using that exact piece of bark to wipe mammoth grease off his chin.

Part 44: Self-Custody and the Lost Seed Phrase
The era of "Number Go Up" had officially arrived on Cave Street.
Bit-Stones, the invisible, weightless, mathematically pure currency, had gone absolutely parabolic. Because there was a hard cap of twenty-one million, and because Thok was currently eating himself into a coma trying to mine them, the scarcity was driving the traders insane.
The price of a single Bit-Stone had skyrocketed from one spear to an absurd fifty premium mammoth steaks.
Borg was the richest man in the valley.

Because Borg had recklessly bought the very first block of fifty Bit-Stones from Thok back when they were considered a weird nerd-experiment, Borg was now a "Whale." He strutted onto the trading floor wearing a cape made entirely of Blue Tundra Lilies, which smelled terrible but screamed extreme wealth.
"Make way for the Whale!" Borg shouted, kicking a regular rock out of his path. "Borg is going to buy the ultimate status symbol! Borg is buying the Chief's summer cave!"
The Chief’s real estate broker, a sleazy caveman named Slik, rubbed his hands together. "That will be exactly fifty Bit-Stones, Borg. A sheer bargain for a cave with a built-in waterfall."
"A pittance!" Borg scoffed. He turned to Grug, who was sitting on his boulder, acting as the valley's primary validation node, cross-checking the decentralized ledger on his white leaf.

"Grug!" Borg commanded. "Execute transaction! Move fifty Bit-Stones from Borg's ledger to Slik's ledger!"
Grug pulled out a piece of charcoal. "Certainly, Borg. I just need you to cryptographically sign the transaction. Please recite your twelve-word Seed Phrase to prove you hold the private keys to that ledger address."
Borg reached confidently into his loincloth. He pulled out a piece of lint. He pulled out a dead moth.
He dug deeper. He started patting his sides.

A single bead of cold sweat rolled down Borg's forehead.
"Hold on," Borg muttered. "Borg put the Seed-Bark right here. Right next to... the mammoth jerky..."
Borg's eyes went wide. A horrifying flashback hit him with the force of a Slashing Hammer.
He remembered eating the greasy mammoth jerky last night. He remembered wiping his chin with a rough piece of bark. He remembered tossing that greasy, meat-scented piece of bark near the fire.
Borg slowly turned his head.
