With a deafening, agonizing shriek of bending metal, the titanium gate groaned.
"Shoot the joints!" Javert yelled, losing his composure for the first time in his career. "Break his leverage!"
Another volley of gunfire illuminated the chamber, but it was too late.
CRACK.
The primary hydraulic piston ruptured. A violent spray of pressurized, black hydraulic fluid erupted across the chamber, blinding the tactical visors. The unhackable, smart-city containment grid shattered under the raw application of human will.

Valjean roared, a sound of absolute, terrifying power, and heaved upward. The massive titanium gate rose eighteen inches, exposing the churning, moonlit waters of the river estuary beyond. Valjean slid his thick shoulders under the crushing weight of the metal, using his own spine as the structural support to keep the guillotine from dropping.
"Go!" Valjean choked out, blood spilling from his mouth, his eyes bloodshot and wide. "Cosette! Now!"
Cosette did not hesitate. The terrified girl from the Rue Plumet vanished, replaced by the daughter of the ghost. She grabbed the collar of Marius’s ragged coat and dragged his semi-conscious body through the narrow gap, plunging into the freezing, turbulent waters of the open river. She pulled the physical go-bag through with her.

They were out.
Valjean remained pinned beneath the gate, holding thousands of pounds of compromised titanium on his back. The tactical squad advanced blindly through the spray of hydraulic fluid, their lasers wildly searching for the targets.
Javert wiped the black fluid from his eyes and stared at the man holding up the gate. For a fraction of a second, the inspector’s algorithmic mind ceased to function. He was looking at a physical impossibility—a variable that broke every rule of his universe. Valjean looked back at him. There was no hatred in the archivist’s eyes. There was only the profound, tragic pity of a man who knew what it meant to be trapped inside a system.

The heavy tactical boots splashed closer.
Valjean shifted his weight, pulling his shoulders out from under the jagged metal, and threw his body backward into the open estuary.
The hydraulic system catastrophically failed. The three-ton titanium gate slammed down with the concussive force of an explosive, biting deep into the concrete floor, violently severing the tunnel from the outside world.
Javert rushed to the grating, gripping the cold iron bars, staring out into the moonlit waters of the river. The river was choppy and dark. There was no thermal signature. There were no ripples. The ghost, the girl, and the architect of the Corinthe squeeze had been completely swallowed by the analog void, leaving Javert locked inside the very cage he had built to trap them.

Chapter 43: The Analog Shore
The first sensation Marius registered was the complete, unsettling absence of static.
For months, his existence in the Gorbeau complex and the Musain had been underscored by the relentless, subliminal hum of server cooling fans, the high-frequency whine of the city's power grid, and the chaotic vibrations of the data traffic. Now, there was only the slow, rhythmic crackle of burning cedar and the steady, mechanical ticking of a grandfather clock.
He opened his eyes. The ceiling above him was constructed of heavy, exposed wooden beams, completely devoid of optic-fiber conduits or recessed LED panels. He was lying on a dense, analog mattress, covered by the immense, physical weight of three woolen blankets. The air smelled of woodsmoke, iodine, and pine needles.

He tried to sit up, but a sharp, agonizing spike of pain flared behind his left eye. He gasped, his hand flying to his temple, finding it tightly bound in sterile cotton and physical adhesive tape.
"Do not move," a soft, urgent voice commanded.
Cosette stepped into the warm, golden light of the fireplace. She wore a heavy knit sweater over her damp clothes, her hair falling loosely around her shoulders. The exhaustion in her eyes was profound, but as she looked at Marius, the radiant, uncorrupted light he had seen at the Depository gate shone through the darkness. She carried a ceramic mug of steaming, dark liquid, stepping quietly to the edge of the bed.

"Where are we?" Marius rasped, his throat feeling like shattered glass.
"Far up the estuary," Cosette answered softly, setting the mug on a heavy wooden nightstand and gently pressing a cool, damp cloth to his forehead. "An old logging cabin. My father purchased it with physical silver years ago. It isn't connected to the grid. There are no cellular nodes for forty miles. Javert’s drones cannot see through the forest canopy."
The name hit Marius like a physical blow. The adrenaline and the memories of the Musain violently flooded his system. He remembered the heavy armor breaching the barricade, the kinetic fire, and Éponine collapsing in the freezing mud.

He sat up violently, ignoring the blinding pain in his skull. His left hand, which had been resting under the wool blankets, clenched into a fist. He opened his fingers. The small, encrypted flash drive Éponine had given him was still there, its metallic casing scratched but intact.
"Enjolras," Marius choked out, looking desperately at Cosette. "The forum. The Corinthe shares... what happened to the barricade?"
Heavy, deliberate footsteps echoed on the wooden floorboards.
John Valjean emerged from the shadows of the cabin. The apex architect looked like he had been broken on a physical wheel. His massive chest was tightly wrapped in yards of white bandages, concealing the cracked ribs he had sacrificed to the titanium gate. He moved with a stiff, agonizing slowness, but his presence still dominated the room. In his enormous hand, he held a scavenged, battery-operated shortwave radio.

"The physical barricade fell at 03:45 AM," Valjean said, his voice a low, gravelly rumble. He did not look at Marius with anger or suspicion anymore; he looked at him with the solemn respect of a fellow survivor. "The federal kinetic units liquidated the cyber-cafe. They are reporting zero survivors among the primary resistance nodes."
Marius stared at the wooden floorboards, the tears he had been too frozen to shed in the alleyway finally spilling over his bruised cheeks. Enjolras. Grantaire. Courfeyrac. Éponine. They had held the line to the absolute end.
"And the market?" Marius whispered, his voice hollowing out. "The shares we registered?"
Valjean adjusted the analog dial on the radio, letting the unencrypted AM broadcast fill the quiet cabin.

"...emergency executive action from the SEC," a polished, corporate anchor’s voice crackled through the speaker. "To protect the systemic integrity of the financial markets from coordinated cyber-terrorism, regulators have authorized the unprecedented reversal of all Corinthe Technologies trades executed on the lit exchange yesterday. The legacy portfolios have been restored to their pre-squeeze valuations, and trading will resume under strict, automated oversight on Monday."
"They rolled back the tape," Marius breathed, absolute despair settling over him. "We broke them. We triggered the margin call. We won the math, and they just reached in and rewrote the ledger. My friends died for nothing."
