Danglars’ sociopathic greed instantly overrode his risk management. His mind raced. If he acted as the clearinghouse for a five-billion-euro whale, the commission fractions alone would generate tens of millions a month. But a darker, more predatory thought blossomed in his mind: I can B-book him. If Danglars internalized the Count's trades—taking the opposite side of the positions instead of routing them to the real market—he could absorb the Count's losses directly into his own P&L.
"I... I will have my CFO draft the facility immediately," Danglars stammered, the greed making his hands shake as he pulled the token from the terminal. "Zero margin limits. Direct FIX API access to our internal routing network."

"Excellent," the Count smiled, a razor-thin, predatory expression. "I will require your internal routing documentation to align my C# algorithms with your servers."
"Of course," Danglars agreed frantically, already calculating the massive synthetic leverage he was about to deploy against his new client.
The Count retrieved his token and walked out of the office without another word.

As the heavy glass doors closed, Danglars collapsed back into his leather chair, euphoric with the belief that he had just trapped a billionaire.
He had no idea that he had just handed the keys to his entire proprietary network to a ghost. By granting Monte Cristo Capital direct FIX API access, Danglars had just given Edmond Dantès the exact digital backdoor required to map his internal risk protocols, monitor his NLP sentiment bots, and lay the groundwork for the devastating API hack that would soon annihilate his empire.

Chapter 28:
The Palais Garnier was ablaze with the cold, brilliant light of a thousand crystal chandeliers. The annual Paris Bourse Charity Gala was the ultimate nexus of French power, a velvet-lined arena where CEOs, senators, and hedge fund managers measured their net worth not in bank statements, but in proximity to the center table.
At that table sat the triad of modern Parisian finance.

Baron Danglars, bloated on corporate debt and algorithmic arrogance, swirled a glass of vintage Bordeaux. To his left sat Count Fernand de Morcerf, draped in the manufactured nobility of private military logistics, his wife Mercédès beside him, her smile perfectly hollow. To his right was Gérard de Villefort, the SEC Chairman, projecting the lethal, untouchable aura of absolute regulatory authority.
They were untouchable. They were the market makers.

Until the heavy oak doors of the grand foyer swung open, and the silence that followed swept through the opera house like a flash crash.
He was announced simply as the Count of Monte Cristo.
He moved with a predatory, frictionless grace, wearing an austere, midnight-black tuxedo devoid of medals or ostentatious lapel pins. His pale, sharply angled face was unreadable, his dark eyes absorbing the room’s metrics with the cold efficiency of a latency-arbitrage algorithm. Beside him walked Haydée, a striking woman of Greek descent, radiating a quiet, lethal elegance that instantly eclipsed every socialite in the room.

The whispers ignited instantly. Who is he? An oil oligarch? A sovereign wealth manager?
The evening’s centerpiece was the charity auction—a facade for the elite to publicly flex their liquidity. The final lot was a pair of purebred Arabian horses, previously owned by a disgraced European monarch.
Danglars, eager to assert his dominance in front of the press, raised his paddle. "Five hundred thousand euros."

The auctioneer beamed. "Five hundred thousand from Baron Danglars. Do I hear—"
"One million," a smooth, metallic voice echoed from the back of the hall.
Every head turned. The Count of Monte Cristo had not raised a paddle. He simply stated the number as if reciting a thermodynamic constant.

Danglars’ face flushed. He was a man who hated losing a spread. "One point two million."
"Three million," the Count replied instantly. There was no hesitation. No consultation with a wealth manager. It was a market-buy order executed with zero regard for slippage.
The room gasped. Danglars gripped his paddle, his quantitative mind calculating the absurdity of the premium. "Three million for two horses is a terrible trade, sir," Danglars sneered across the room.

"It is only a terrible trade, Baron, if you are trading with leverage," the Count replied, his voice carrying perfectly over the silence. "I do not use proprietary trading firms or other men’s capital, and I do not tolerate drawdown rules. I trade my own real, deposited accounts. Three million euros is simply the cost of introducing myself."
The Count gestured to his attache, who walked directly to the auctioneer and handed over a physical, cryptographic bearer bond that cleared instantly through the Bank of Thomson & French.
