Grug looked at the Magic Wall, the empty Oracle Stumps, and the abandoned Smart Contracts. Every mathematical innovation he had built to ensure fairness had been entirely subverted by a single political decree.
"We can't fix this with ledgers, Thok," Grug muttered, turning his back on Cave Street. "If the Chief can simply redefine wealth whenever his friends are in trouble, the money itself is broken. We need an asset that exists outside the Chief's jurisdiction. We need a completely new monetary standard."

Part 41: The Gold Standard (Shiny Yellow Rocks)
The bailout of Ugg the Market Maker had saved Cave Street from immediate collapse, but it had introduced a terminal disease into the valley’s economy: Hyperinflation.
Because the Chief had emptied the Royal Winter Cave to cover Ugg and Borg’s degenerate gambling debts, he suddenly needed to replenish the tribal reserves before it actually snowed. His solution was simple, brutal, and economically devastating. He declared that ordinary pine needles were now official legal tender, backed by the "full faith and club of the Chief."
He then ordered his guards to strip every pine tree in the valley and flood the market with them to buy real goods.
By Wednesday, the price of a single trout had skyrocketed from two pointy sticks to four hundred pine needles. By Thursday morning, it was eight thousand pine needles.

Borg was currently trying to buy a small basket of berries from Lom. He wasn't carrying a pouch; he was dragging a massive, interwoven sled piled high with hundreds of thousands of pine needles.
"Lom!" Borg panted, wiping sweat from his brow. "Here is four hundred thousand needles! Give Borg berries!"
Lom shook his head sadly. "Price just went up, Borg. Half a million needles. By the time you count them, it will be a million. Pine needles are trash. Wind blows, Chief makes more money."

Grug watched this tragedy unfold from the entrance of a deep, dark, newly excavated tunnel at the far end of the valley. He was covered in soot and dirt.
"Fiat money always returns to its intrinsic value, Thok," Grug said softly. "Which is zero. The Chief can print pine needles, he can print sticks, he can print banana-leaf receipts. We cannot price our labor in a currency that requires zero calories to produce."
Thok emerged from the tunnel behind Grug, carrying a heavy stone pickaxe. He looked absolutely exhausted. "Thok swing pickaxe at solid rock for three weeks. Thok's arms feel like jelly. Why we do this, Grug?"
Grug held out his hand. Sitting in his dirty palm was a small, incredibly dense, bright yellow rock.
"Because of this, Thok," Grug smiled.

Thok squinted at it. "Is shiny. Can Thok eat it?"
"No," Grug said. "Bite it."
Thok popped the rock into his mouth and bit down hard. He grimaced and spit it back into Grug's hand. "Tastes like dirt. But... Thok's tooth leave a little mark in it."
"Exactly," Grug said, his eyes gleaming. "It is malleable enough to be shaped, but indestructible enough to last forever. Throw it in the fire, it melts into a puddle, then hardens back into a rock. Throw it in the river, it never rusts. But most importantly..."
Grug pointed his torch down the deep, dark, terrifyingly narrow tunnel they had just spent a month digging.
"...it is incredibly scarce. To find just one handful of these Shiny Yellow Rocks, it requires immense caloric expenditure, dangerous labor, and time. The Chief cannot print it. Ugg cannot fake it. It absorbs human suffering and stores it as pure, unadulterated value."

Grug had discovered the Gold Standard.
He marched down to Cave Street, carrying a small leather pouch. He set up a stall right next to Lom’s fish stand. Grug laid out five of his premium, hand-woven, heavy-duty fishing nets. They were the best nets in the valley.
Zog approached, dragging a sled full of pine needles. "Grug! Zog needs net! Zog will give you two million pine needles!"
"I do not accept Chief-fiat," Grug announced loudly, ensuring the entire market could hear him. "My labor is no longer priced in political promises. My nets cost exactly one Shiny Yellow Rock."
Grug held up the heavy, glittering nugget. The firelight caught its edges.

The trading floor went silent. In a world of dull grey rocks, rotting fish, and scratchy pine needles, the yellow rock was mesmerizing. It triggered a primal, aesthetic desire in the lizard-brain of every caveman present.
"Where Zog get Shiny Yellow Rock?" Zog asked, mesmerized.
"You have to mine it," Grug said, pointing to the distant tunnel. "Or, you can sell me something of actual value for one."
Ugg the Market Maker lumbered over. He looked at the yellow rock. He felt its incredible density. His mercantile instincts flared. He immediately realized that whoever controlled this rock controlled the new economy.
"Ugg will give Grug ten premium mammoth steaks for that rock," Ugg rumbled.

Grug smiled. "Deal."
The pivot was instantaneous. Because the Shiny Yellow Rocks held their purchasing power perfectly, Gresham’s Law went into reverse. The bad money (pine needles) was completely abandoned, and the good money (gold) was hoarded.
Within a month, Cave Street had stabilized. Inflation was dead. If Borg wanted a Shiny Yellow Rock, he had to produce actual goods—or go into the dark, dangerous tunnels and swing a pickaxe for weeks. The money supply only expanded at the exact rate of human productivity.
The Chief was furious. He stood on his balcony, holding a handful of pine needles.
"Why nobody take Chief's needles?!" the Chief bellowed. "Chief commands you to accept needles for berries!"
"Needles are worthless, Chief!" Lom yelled back from the floor. "We only accept the Yellow Rock!"

"Then Chief will print Yellow Rocks!" the Chief declared. He grabbed a pickaxe and confidently marched toward the mines.
Twenty minutes later, the Chief emerged from the tunnel, wheezing violently, covered in dirt, having successfully mined absolutely nothing. The Proof of Work required by the geology of the valley completely neutralized his political power. He couldn't inflate the currency because he was too out of shape to swing a pickaxe.
Grug sat on his boulder, victorious. He had finally separated Money from State.
But hard money has a hard physical reality.
A few weeks later, Ugg decided to buy a massive, premium commercial cave complex from Zog to expand his market-making operations. The agreed-upon price was five hundred Shiny Yellow Rocks.
Ugg, being the wealthiest man in the valley, had the rocks. But the settlement process was a nightmare.

Ugg enlisted Thok to help him move the funds. Five hundred gold rocks weighed roughly two hundred pounds. Thok loaded them into a massive woven basket and hoisted it onto his back.
Thok’s knees buckled. His spine popped audibly.
"Thok... spine... going... to snap," Thok gasped, his face turning purple as he slowly dragged the basket across the valley floor toward Zog's cave.
It took them three agonizing hours to move the money. Along the way, a pack of hungry wolves smelled Thok's sweat and tried to attack them. Grug had to fight them off with a torch while Thok lay pinned under the weight of the currency.
When they finally arrived, Zog insisted on biting every single one of the five hundred rocks to ensure Ugg hadn't painted regular limestone yellow. The verification process took another four hours.
