As we approached Wilson’s garage, the traffic slowed to a crawl. The flashing red and blue lights of police cruisers painted the ash-heaps in the colors of a violently oscillating chart. A crowd had gathered in front of the defunct pumps—a cluster of retail onlookers staring at a zero-liquidity event.

Tom slammed on the brakes, the legacy infrastructure of his car coming to a heavy, grounded halt. "There's some bad trouble here," he said, his voice tightening. He wasn't entirely immune to the OTC penny stocks he traded on the side; Myrtle Wilson was his highest-risk, off-the-books asset, and instinct told him the position had just blown up.

We pushed through the crowd. The scene inside the garage was the physical manifestation of a catastrophic drawdown. George Wilson, a man who had spent his entire life grinding out micro-pips in a rigged market, stood frozen in the center of the room. He was completely liquidated. His eyes were hollow, staring at the floor where the ultimate stop-loss had been triggered.
On a worktable against the wall, wrapped in a heavy blanket, lay Myrtle Wilson.

Her life had been violently liquidated, the equity wiped out in a single, massive downward spike. Her thick, dark blood mingled with the oil and dust of the garage floor, the tragic result of an unhedged position exposed to infinite risk. She had rushed out into the twilight, desperate to wave down the wealth she thought would save her, only to be crushed by the sheer momentum of an unstoppable machine.

Michaelis, a neighboring trader who ran an unprofitable coffee stand, was giving his statement to a police officer, clutching his mobile phone as if the screen could somehow rewind the price action. "It was a yellow car," Michaelis stammered, pointing out toward the dark, winding road. "A big, custom yellow sports car. It tore through the spread without hitting the brakes. She ran out into the street—I think she thought she recognized the driver—and it just swallowed her order. Smashed right through her and vanished into the dark."

Tom stood perfectly still, his heavy, arrogant face draining of color. He had just witnessed the total collapse of his shadow ledger. But the shock only lasted a millisecond. The survival instincts of a tier-one market maker kicked in, immediately shifting from emotional slippage to liability management. He realized that Wilson, and the rest of the Valley, associated the yellow car with him, because he had driven it there earlier that afternoon.

Tom crossed the room and grabbed Wilson by the shoulders, physically lifting the broken man from his despair. "Listen to me," Tom hissed, his voice cold and commanding. "You have to understand something. That yellow car I was driving this afternoon wasn't mine. Do you hear me? I was just bringing it to you to look at. The car belongs to James Gatz."

He was redirecting the toxic order flow. With a few calculated words, Tom Buchanan perfectly hedged his own exposure, shifting the entire regulatory and physical liability onto the algorithms of West Egg. He took the catastrophic loss of his mistress and turned it into the ultimate weapon to permanently liquidate Gatsby.
We walked back out to the armored coupe in silence. As Tom put the car in gear and accelerated away from the Valley of Blown Accounts, I looked back at the flashing police lights. The macroeconomic trend had irrevocably shifted. The bullish rally was over, and the market was entering a freefall.
