"Yag see snowflakes," Yag announced to nobody in particular. He dropped his black stone down the tube and grabbed a gourd of juice.
Clack-clack-clack-THUD.
The second stone hit the hammock. The weight threshold was breached. The wooden pivot snapped. The vines released.
In the middle of a warm, perfectly sunny afternoon, the Smart Contract executed a payout for a catastrophic blizzard. The wooden chute dumped forty premium pointy sticks directly onto the ground, where Borg’s intern quickly scooped them up.

Zog fell to his knees, screaming at the blue sky. "THERE IS NO SNOW! I AM RUINED BY THE SUN!"
Grug watched the sticks disappear. He looked up at the ridge. He could clearly see Elder Yag and Elder Mig chugging fermented berry juice and eating jerky.
Borg slid down the ridge a few minutes later, wiping grease from his chin. "Code is law, Grug!" Borg laughed, patting his newly won wealth. "The Oracles have spoken! The blizzard was severe!"
Grug sat heavily on his boulder, completely defeated by human nature.

"The contract is mathematically perfect, Thok," Grug whispered, staring at the empty baskets swinging in the warm breeze. "But the data is fundamentally corrupt. If the reward for lying is higher than the reward for telling the truth, a decentralized Oracle Network is just a decentralized bribery network."
Thok hefted his oak club. "Thok go smash Oracles?"
"No," Grug sighed. "Smashing them doesn't fix the code. We have to make it economically impossible for them to lie. We can't just trust their eyes. We have to threaten their wallets. If they want to vote on the truth, they have to put their own money on the chopping block."

Part 38: Proof of Stake and Slashing
The three Elders of the Decentralized Oracle Network were nursing severe hangovers. Elder Yag groaned, clutching his head as the bright Pleistocene sun beat down on Cave Street. The fermented berry juice Borg had used to bribe them into triggering a fake blizzard had been potent, but the macroeconomic hangover was worse.
Nobody trusted the Oracles anymore. The Smart Contracts were hanging empty in the trees. The automated economy had ground to a halt because the data feed was corrupt.
Grug stood before the Magic Wall, holding a piece of charcoal. Thok stood next to him, holding an absolutely massive, terrifyingly heavy boulder tied to the end of a thick oak branch. It looked like a prehistoric sledgehammer.

"The problem with our network," Grug announced to the suspicious crowd, "is that the Oracles have no skin in the game. If Elder Yag lies about the weather, he gets a bribe from Borg, and he loses nothing. His risk-to-reward ratio for committing fraud is infinite."
Grug gestured to three large, flat tree stumps he had positioned directly beneath the Oracle’s bamboo data-tubes.
"If you want to provide data to Cave Street," Grug declared, pointing at the hungover elders, "you must prove you believe in your data. You must provide Proof of Stake."
Elder Mig squinted. "What is stake? Like mammoth meat?"

"No, Stake is your collateral," Grug explained. "Before you are allowed to drop a black stone down the tube to verify an event, you must place your most valuable asset on one of these stumps. If you verify the truth alongside the consensus of the network, you get your asset back, plus a small fee for your honesty."
Elder Yag liked the sound of fees. "And if Yag lie?"
Grug smiled coldly and pointed to Thok. Thok hefted the massive sledgehammer, a look of pure, unadulterated joy on his face.
"If you lie," Grug said, his voice dropping to a serious octave, "if you vote against the obvious physical reality, or if you maliciously break consensus... Thok will execute the Slashing Protocol."
"What is Slashing?" Oob asked nervously.
SMASH.

Thok swung the hammer down on a stray coconut resting on a nearby rock. The coconut didn't just break; it vaporized into a mist of milk and pulp.
"That is Slashing," Grug said. "Your staked asset is permanently destroyed. You are financially ruined. The penalty for lying is now exponentially higher than any bribe Borg could ever offer you."
The valley went dead silent. The economic game theory had just shifted violently.
Zog, eager to test the new system and win back his dignity, immediately challenged Borg to a new Smart Contract.
"I bet twenty sticks," Zog declared loudly, "that Ugg the Market Maker will eat a fish for lunch! He always eats fish on Tuesdays!"

Borg, sensing an opportunity, narrowed his eyes. "Borg bets twenty sticks Ugg will eat a mammoth steak! Assets locked!"
They placed forty sticks into the swinging escrow baskets. Grug rigged the release mechanism to the Oracle hammock.
At noon, the entire valley watched Ugg’s central stall. Ugg, completely unaware he was the underlying asset of a derivatives trade, reached into his reserves, pulled out a large, silvery trout, and bit its head off.
"Fish!" Zog cheered. "The truth is Fish!"
Up on the ridge, the Oracles prepared to vote.
Borg snuck up the back path, clutching a small pouch of premium berries. He crawled over to Elder Mig.

"Psst. Mig," Borg whispered, holding out the berries. "Ugg is eating a steak. A big, hairy steak. Drop the stone for steak. I give you these berries."
Elder Mig looked at the berries. He was hungry. Old habits died hard.
"Okay," Mig whispered back. He took the berries.
Down below, Grug called out for the data query. "Oracles! State your Stake and verify the lunch!"
Elder Oob hobbled forward. He placed his life savings—three pristine Hard Money Shells—onto the first stump. He looked down, saw Ugg eating the trout, and dropped a white stone (Fish) down his tube.
Elder Yag stepped up. He placed his prized possession—a carved mammoth ivory comb—onto the second stump. He also saw the trout. He dropped a white stone (Fish) down his tube.

Elder Mig stepped up to the third stump. He looked at the 5-berry bribe Borg had just given him. Then, he looked at his own required Stake. To vote, he had to place his only winter coat—a massive, incredibly warm, irreplaceable cave-bear pelt—onto the stump.
He placed the pelt down. He picked up a black stone (Steak).
Mig did the prehistoric math. If he voted "Steak," he kept Borg's 5 berries. But he would be the minority outlier against Oob and Yag. His data would be rejected by consensus. And Thok...
Mig looked down at Thok. Thok was staring at Mig's cave-bear pelt, gripping the Slashing Hammer so hard his knuckles were white. Thok was literally vibrating with the desire to destroy.
Mig realized that a 5-berry bribe was not worth a 500-berry winter coat. The economic incentive to lie had been completely crushed by the sheer terror of the Slashing Protocol.
Mig slowly put the black stone down. He picked up a white stone (Fish). He dropped it down the tube.
