"I'll route it tonight," Fernand said.
Danglars took another sip of his scotch, hiding a triumphant smile behind the rim of the glass. He had secured the Head of Trading desk for himself, eliminated the only analyst smart enough to uncover his own systemic frauds, and kept his hands perfectly clean. The market was ruthless, but Danglars knew the ultimate truth: the most devastating trades were never executed on the floor.
They were executed in the dark.

Chapter 3:
The Mediterranean sunset bled across the hull of the Pharaon, Morrel Capital’s tri-deck corporate yacht moored in the exclusive harbor of the Vieux-Port. String lights reflected off the dark water, and the ambient pulse of a live jazz quartet masked the distant hum of the city’s server farms. For one night, the brutal arithmetic of the global markets was suspended.
Edmond stood on the aft deck in a tailored midnight-blue tuxedo, feeling entirely like an imposter who had successfully hacked reality. Beside him stood Mercédès, radiant in a trailing silk gown, her hand resting on his arm. The three-carat flawless diamond caught the harbor lights, scattering fractured rainbows across the teak deck. She looked up at him, her dark eyes filled with a terrifying, absolute certainty.

"You keep checking your phone," Mercédès murmured, a teasing smile playing on her lips. "If you check the Asian session open one more time, I am throwing it into the sea."
Edmond laughed, slipping the matte-black device into his jacket pocket. "The markets are closed to me tonight. I was just making sure the routing algorithms were asleep. I promise, I am entirely offline."

A few yards away, Pierre Morrel tapped a silver spoon against his crystal champagne flute. The chatter of sixty elite traders, quants, and Marseille high society fell silent.
"To edge!" Morrel boomed, raising his glass. "In our business, edge is everything. It is the milliseconds we steal from the void. It is the courage to hold the line when the algorithms tell you to run. Yesterday, this young man found an edge that saved my firm. Today, he secured an edge that will save his soul." Morrel turned his glass toward the couple. "To Edmond and Mercédès. May your yields be infinite, and your drawdowns brief."

"To Edmond and Mercédès!" the crowd echoed.
At the edge of the gathering, Danglars raised his glass with perfect, mechanical grace. He took a measured sip, his pale eyes flicking toward his encrypted smartwatch. It was 8:45 PM.
Slumped against the mahogany bar, Fernand Mondego did not raise his glass. He was on his fourth martini, his tuxedo jacket unbuttoned, his face slick with a cold sweat. Every time Mercédès laughed, Fernand’s hand twitched. He kept staring at the gangway, his breathing shallow and erratic, like a trader watching a deeply leveraged position tick closer to liquidation.

"Breathe, Fernand," Danglars whispered, gliding up beside the broker. "Panic is a highly correlated asset. Stop broadcasting it."
"It’s taking too long," Fernand hissed, staring at the dark water. "You said the SEC emergency portal triggers an immediate strike team."
"They are building the kinetic chain," Danglars replied softly, his voice devoid of any human warmth. "Patience."

On the deck, Edmond pulled Mercédès close, wrapping his arms around her waist as the jazz quartet shifted into a slow, melancholic ballad. "I don't deserve this," he whispered into her hair. "A year ago, I was writing Python scripts in a basement apartment, trying to scrape pennies off forex spreads. Now I have the desk. I have you. The variance is too high. The universe always reverts to the mean."
Mercédès framed his face with her hands, her thumbs tracing his cheekbones. "There is no mean reversion tonight, Edmond. You built this life. You earned it."
She leaned in to kiss him.

A blinding white light cut through the romance, washing out the string lights and illuminating the deck in stark, clinical definition.
The low thrum of high-output marine engines vibrated against the hull. Out of the darkness, two matte-black tactical Zodiacs flanked the Pharaon. Simultaneously, three black SUVs slammed to a halt on the concrete pier, their doors thrown open before the tires had even stopped spinning.

The jazz quartet stopped abruptly, a saxophone screeching in surprise.
Heavy combat boots hit the teak gangway. A dozen men and women in dark windbreakers emblazoned with the yellow letters FBI and CFTC ENFORCEMENT swarmed the deck. They moved with the terrifying, synchronized efficiency of a high-frequency trading bot executing a hostile takeover.

"Keep your hands visible! Nobody touches a phone!" a lead agent shouted, his hand resting casually on the sidearm strapped to his hip.
Pierre Morrel stepped forward, his face flushed with indignation. "What is the meaning of this? This is a private charter! I am Pierre Morrel, CEO of Morrel Capital, and I demand to see a warrant."
