The Musain cyber-cafe erupted.

It was a deafening, primal roar of absolute victory. Traders were weeping, screaming, embracing each other as generational debt was wiped out in a matter of seconds. Courfeyrac was laughing hysterically, pulling Grantaire into a crushing hug. The barricade had held.

Enjolras stood at the center of the chaos, his arms crossed, his face illuminated by the blinding green light of a $1,200 ticker. He did not smile. He watched the institutional architecture burn with the cold satisfaction of a general who had finally laid siege to the capital.

Marius stepped back from the terminal. The adrenaline that had sustained him for weeks suddenly crashed, leaving a profound, hollow stillness in his chest. He looked at the staggering numbers on the screen. He had beaten his grandfather. He had avenged Georges Pontmercy.

But as the cheers shook the drywall of the Musain, Marius looked at his watch.

The market was broken, but the physical world was still turning. If Javert’s federal dragnet was utilizing the market chaos as a distraction, the Rue Plumet could be compromised. Marius grabbed his ragged coat, slipping unnoticed out of the back room, leaving the revolution behind to sprint toward the analog fortress.

Chapter 35: The Empty Fortress

The financial district of Montreuil-sur-Mer was descending into absolute, algorithmic hysteria. As Marius Pontmercy sprinted through the rain-slicked streets, massive holographic tickers on the glass towers flashed emergency red. Institutional portfolios were bleeding out in real-time, their synthetic wealth evaporating into the decentralized wallets of the working class. Sirens wailed in the distance as federal regulators scrambled to contain the systemic collapse. But Marius did not care about the broken market. His mind was locked entirely on the analog sanctuary of Rue Plumet.

He reached the unzoned residential sector, his lungs burning, his ragged coat heavy with freezing rain. The towering chestnut trees shielded the twelve-foot stone wall from the neon chaos of the dying city.

Marius gripped the rusted iron bars of the gate. He looked toward the heavy oak door of the townhouse, expecting to see the warm, incandescent glow of the tungsten bulb.

The house was completely dark.

A cold, suffocating dread seized his chest. Marius shoved against the heavy iron gate. It did not resist. The ancient, physical locking mechanism had been methodically dismantled, leaving the gate swinging freely on its rusted hinges.

He stepped into the overgrown garden. The silence here was no longer peaceful; it was the deafening, absolute silence of an abandoned server.

"Cosette!" Marius yelled, throwing all caution to the wind, his voice echoing off the high stone walls.

There was no answer. He ran up the gravel path and threw open the heavy oak door. The interior of the townhouse was completely stripped of life. The analog go-bags were gone. The heavy wooden chairs were pushed aside, and the hearth was dead and cold. John Valjean had executed a perfect, physical deletion. The ghost had logged off, leaving no forwarding address, no digital trail, and no trace of the radiant girl who had finally looked through the bars of the gate.

Marius fell to his knees in the center of the empty room, the sheer gravity of the loss crushing the breath from his lungs. He had torn down the legacy funds. He had broken his grandfather’s empire and avenged his father. But the only thing in the world he actually wanted was gone forever.

As he stared blindly at the cold stone floor, a sliver of white caught his eye near the heavy oak baseboard. It was a torn scrap of physical paper, hastily wedged into a crack in the floorboards—a desperate, analog breadcrumb Valjean had missed in his ruthless sweep.

Marius pulled it out with trembling fingers. It was scratched in Cosette's frantic handwriting.

England. Tonight. He found your letter.

She was being taken off the continent entirely. Once Valjean crossed the border and vanished into the analog grid of a foreign country, Marius would never find her again. He had to reach the extraction point.

But as Marius stood up, clutching the paper to his chest, the burner phone he had grabbed from the Musain violently vibrated in his pocket.

It was a priority, encrypted text from Enjolras.

The prime brokers halted the lit exchange. The SEC is intervening under emergency powers to reverse our trades. They are sending physical kinetic units to the Musain to seize our servers and delete the registered shares. We are locking the steel doors. We are building the barricade out of their own hardware. Do not come back. Survive.

Marius stared at the glowing screen. The revolution was under physical siege. His brothers in the ABC Forum—the men who had accepted him when he had nothing—were about to be slaughtered by federal enforcers to protect the billionaires' portfolios.

In his right hand, he held the path to the extraction point, his only chance to stop Valjean and save the girl he loved. In his left hand, the desperate, dying pulse of the barricade.

Marius closed his eyes, the weight of the impossible choice pressing down on his soul. He looked one last time at the empty analog fortress, slowly folded Cosette's note into his pocket, and stepped out into the freezing rain to march toward the Musain.

Chapter 36: The Barricade of Silicon

The digital war was over. The physical slaughter was about to begin.

Marius sprinted through the neon-drenched streets of the retail district, the freezing rain masking the tears that burned his eyes. Above him, the skyline of Montreuil-sur-Mer was fractured by the sweeping, blinding spotlights of federal gunships. The SEC had initiated a Level 5 Martial Halt. Automated riot-suppression drones swarmed the intersections, broadcasting deafening compliance warnings, while armored kinetic transport vehicles rumbled toward the epicenter of the financial rebellion.

Marius turned the corner into the narrow alleyway housing the Musain cyber-cafe and stopped dead.

The ABC Forum had not just locked the heavy steel doors; they had ripped the street apart.

Dozens of retail traders, gig-workers, and indebted coders were dragging massive, decommissioned server racks out of the basement. They hurled vending machines, concrete planters, and stripped-out autonomous delivery chassis into a massive, jagged pile blocking the alley's choke point. It was a barricade built from the dead hardware of the system that had oppressed them. Sparks showered the wet pavement as Courfeyrac used a scavenged plasma torch to weld the steel chassis together, fusing the debris into an impenetrable wall of iron and silicon.

Marius climbed over a overturned data-terminal and dropped into the fortified trench behind the wall.
