Before Lom could answer, Chairman Ugg lumbered over, his turtle-shell badge gleaming.

"Halt!" Ugg bellowed. "Is Grug trading an Unregistered Security?"

"It's a fish-hook, Ugg!" Grug pleaded.

"Does it pass the How-We-Eat Test?" Ugg asked, narrowing his eyes and trying to remember the legal phrasing the Chief had taught him. "Is there an investment of sticks... in a common cave... with an expectation of profits... derived solely from the hunting efforts of others?"

"I don't know!" Grug cried. "It catches fish!"

"Grug did not file a Stone-1 (S-1) Registration Form with the SEC," Ugg declared triumphantly. "Grug is operating as an unlicensed broker-dealer in an unregulated ecosystem. The penalty is immediate asset forfeiture."

Ugg snatched the fish-hook out of Grug’s hand and popped it into his own pouch.

"Wait, you're not going to feed me to the Saber-cat?" Grug asked, slightly relieved.

"No," Ugg smiled. "SEC prefers to just take Grug's stuff as a 'settlement fine' and let Grug go back to work so Grug can make more stuff for the SEC to take later. It is a sustainable revenue model."

Grug slumped back against his boulder. Cave Street was dead.

The SEC had completely suffocated the market. Innovation was illegal unless you were already rich. Trading was banned unless you had massive capital. And every transaction was subjected to arbitrary, heavy-handed taxation masquerading as "investor protection fees."

Borg, Ugg, and the Chief were richer than ever, sitting safely behind the walls of regulatory capture. The retail crowd was back to eating bark and staring at the Magic Wall, unable to participate.

Grug looked at the Magic Wall. He looked at Ugg’s central trading stall. He realized the core problem wasn't the trading itself; the problem was that all the trading happened in one place, controlled by one giant man with a club and a turtle-shell badge.

"If the Central Authority controls the ledger, the Central Authority controls the wealth," Grug whispered to himself.

He didn't need to change the rules of Cave Street. He needed to make Cave Street entirely obsolete. He needed a system of record that Ugg couldn't confiscate, the Chief couldn't regulate, and the Saber-cats couldn't eat. He needed a ledger that belonged to everyone.

Part 34: The Rock-Chain (Blockchain)

Grug gathered the impoverished, un-accredited retail traders in the deepest, dampest part of the valley, far from the prying eyes of the SEC and Chairman Ugg.

Lom, Thok, and a dozen others huddled around a small, smokeless fire, looking nervous. They were all technically committing securities fraud just by standing there without a massive pile of net worth.

"The system is rigged," Grug whispered, his voice echoing off the damp limestone. "Ugg and the Chief control the Magic Wall. It’s a centralized ledger. If Ugg decides to wipe away your fat-torch chart with a wet rag, your assets cease to exist. The SEC can freeze your account by literally putting a boulder in front of your cave."

"We know," Lom whimpered, still wearing his single, worthless pink feather. "But Ugg has club. Ugg has Saber-cat. What we do?"

"We abandon the Magic Wall," Grug declared, pulling a large, heavy, incredibly flat slate of rock from the shadows. "We build a ledger they cannot erase, cannot confiscate, and cannot alter. We build... The Rock-Chain."

The traders stared at the heavy rock. It did not look like a financial revolution. It looked like a hernia.

"How a rock defeat Ugg?" Thok asked, poking it.

"It is not just one rock, Thok," Grug explained, his eyes gleaming with decentralized fervor. "It is a continuous, immutable sequence of rocks. Here is how it works: When I want to trade a fish to Lom, we do not go to Cave Street. We do not tell Ugg. I stand here and shout, 'GRUG GIVES LOM ONE FISH!'"

Grug cupped his hands and yelled it loudly. The traders winced, looking nervously toward the cave entrance.

"Then," Grug continued, "every single one of you takes your own flat rock and a sharp piece of flint. You all race to carve that transaction into the stone."

Lom rubbed his arms. "Carving stone is hard work. Why Lom do work for Grug's trade?"

"Incentives, Lom!" Grug grinned. "Because the first person to finish carving the stone, solve the cryptographic puzzle, and tie their stone to the previous stone with a thick vine... gets a reward. I will give the winner a shiny, newly minted Hard Money Shell from my emergency reserve."

Thok’s ears perked up. Hard labor for guaranteed money? This was his specialty. "What is puzzle?"

"Proof of Work," Grug said. "To prove your rock is valid, you cannot just scribble. You must carve a hyper-realistic, anatomically perfect drawing of a Woolly Mammoth next to the transaction. It takes immense physical energy. It proves you expended actual caloric effort to secure the network."

"And the vines?" Lom asked.

"The vines link the blocks—I mean, the rocks—together," Grug said, tying a thick piece of hemp around the slate. "You must draw the exact shape of the previous rock on the top of your new rock. If Ugg tries to sneak a fake rock into the middle of the chain, the drawings won't match, the vines won't tie, and the network will reject it."

It was a brilliantly absurd system. It required no trust. It required no central Market Maker. It only required everyone to do a massive amount of redundant physical labor.

The Rock-Chain went live the next morning.

Grug wanted to buy a bundle of firewood from a trader named Zog.

"GRUG SENDS ZOG FIVE BERRIES FOR WOOD!" Grug shouted into the valley.

Immediately, the valley erupted into a cacophony of rhythmic chink-chink-chink sounds. Dozens of retail traders, acting as decentralized "miners," dropped what they were doing and started furiously chiseling the transaction into their heavy slate rocks, sweating profusely as they tried to carve anatomically correct mammoths.

Thok, whose upper body strength was unrivaled, finished first. He was essentially an ASIC (Application-Specific Integrated Caveman).

"Thok finish block!" Thok roared, holding up a beautifully carved, incredibly heavy slate. He tied it to the Genesis Rock with a vine.

"Valid!" Grug checked the mammoth. "The network has reached consensus. The transaction is immutable. Thok, here is your block reward." Grug tossed Thok a Shell.

Zog handed Grug the firewood. The trade was complete. Ugg hadn't seen it. The Chief hadn't taxed it. No SEC regulations were triggered.

For a week, the Rock-Chain operated in glorious, unregulated freedom. Thok set up a "Mining Farm" by eating ten premium steaks a day and dual-wielding chisels, carving blocks faster than anyone else. Peer-to-peer transactions flourished.

But a truly decentralized network inevitably attracts the attention of a threatened centralized power.

On Friday, Chairman Ugg stomped into the decentralized camp. He was furious. His trading volume on Cave Street had plummeted to zero. He wasn't collecting any fees.

"What is this?!" Ugg bellowed, pointing his club at the massive, dragging line of heavy rocks tied together with vines.

"It is a distributed ledger, Ugg," Grug said smugly, adjusting a rock that was currently bruising his hip. "It is censorship-resistant."

"Ugg is SEC!" Ugg roared. "Ugg can censor anything Ugg can smash! Ugg will alter ledger!"

Ugg grabbed a sharp rock. He stomped over to the end of the chain. With blinding speed, Ugg carved: GRUG OWES UGG ONE THOUSAND BERRIES AND HIS CAVE. He didn't bother drawing the mammoth; he just drew a stick figure of himself with a very large club. He grabbed a vine and tried to tie his fake rock to the chain.
