"Don't ask me for the source code, rich boy," Éponine interrupted, her voice harsh and defensive. She shoved her hands deep into the pockets of her oversized tech-wear, taking a step back toward the door. "It’s an analog fortress. No cameras, no network. But that’s where your phantom is hiding."
"Thank you," Marius said, gripping her shoulder. It was a gesture of profound friendship, completely devoid of the romance she craved. "I owe you my life."

"You owe me bandwidth," Éponine corrected softly, pulling away from his touch. "Go get your girl, Pontmercy. The market opens on Monday."
She turned and walked out of the Musain, disappearing into the neon-lit rain, having successfully executed the most devastating, uncompensated transaction of her life.

Chapter 31: The House on Rue Plumet
The Rue Plumet was a dead pixel in the hyper-mapped grid of Montreuil-sur-Mer. Tucked away in a forgotten, unzoned residential sector, the property was surrounded by towering chestnut trees and a twelve-foot stone wall choked with decades of ivy. There were no autonomous delivery drones buzzing overhead, no optic-fiber junction boxes on the street corners, and no biometric surveillance cameras mounted to the wrought-iron gates.
It was a physical cold wallet, an absolute analog sanctuary purchased entirely with gold bullion

Marius approached the property long after midnight, staying to the deep shadows. He had left his burner phone and smart-watch at the Musain, terrified that even a passive Bluetooth ping might trigger whatever off-grid countermeasures the massive archivist had installed.
He reached the heavy wrought-iron gate and pressed his hands against the rusted metal. The silence of the garden inside was profound, contrasting violently with the low, constant hum of the city’s server farms miles away.

For an hour, Marius waited in the freezing dampness of the shadows, doubting the napkin Éponine had given him. He was a fool. He was a retail trader fighting a billion-dollar legacy fund, and he was risking everything to chase a phantom he had stared at for three seconds in a lobby.
Then, the heavy oak door of the townhouse opened.
Warm, incandescent light—not the harsh blue glare of an LED or a monitor, but the soft, golden glow of a physical tungsten bulb—spilled across the overgrown stone path.

Cosette stepped out into the garden.
She wore a simple wool shawl over her shoulders against the night chill. She did not check a feed; she did not scan the horizon for threats. She simply looked up at the moon, breathing in the scent of wet earth and damp leaves. To Marius, standing on the other side of the iron bars, she looked like a miracle—a piece of uncorrupted code in a world dying from malware.
Marius stepped out of the shadows.
His shoe crunched softly on the gravel. Cosette gasped, taking a sudden step backward toward the safety of the oak door, her eyes wide with the ingrained caution her father had drilled into her.

"Don't run," Marius whispered, his voice trembling, barely carrying over the rusted iron gate. "Please. I am not a threat. I’m the boy from the Depository."
Cosette froze. She peered through the dense ivy and the heavy iron bars. The moonlight caught his face—the exhausted, fierce, undeniably aristocratic features of the young man in the ragged coat. The fear instantly evaporated, replaced by a sudden, electric surge of adrenaline.
She took a hesitant step forward, moving toward the gate until she was mere inches from the iron bars.

"You found me," she breathed, her voice a quiet melody that completely derailed Marius's train of thought. "My father said the outside world was nothing but algorithms and predators. He said no one looks up from their screens."
"I looked up," Marius said softly, stepping up to the gate. "And I saw you."
Cosette’s fingers reached out, resting lightly on the cold iron separating them. "Who are you? My father thinks you are a corporate scout. Or worse."

"My name is Marius Pontmercy," he said. He didn't offer his grandfather’s title. He didn't offer his net worth. "I used to live in a glass tower. I was supposed to be a portfolio manager, building the systems that crush the working class. But I walked away. I live in the retail underground now. I’m trying to break the machines."
Cosette looked at him, completely captivated. Her entire life had been defined by Valjean’s desperate need to hide, to avoid the market, to survive in absolute secrecy. But standing before her was someone who was actively fighting the system that kept her a prisoner.

"My name is Cosette," she whispered, offering the data point like a priceless encryption key. "I have lived behind these walls for ten years. I have never owned a phone. I have never seen the ocean. Sometimes... sometimes I think I am just a ghost my father invented to keep himself company."
Marius reached through the narrow gap in the iron bars. He didn't grab her hand, but he held his fingers inches from hers, respecting the physical firewall she had lived behind her whole life.
