Javert’s eyes bypassed the scammers entirely, locking onto the shattered window frame, where the freezing rain blew into the destroyed apartment.
He walked slowly to the precipice, looking down at the rusted fire escape leading into the pitch-black alleyway below. There was no heat signature, no digital footprint, and no trace of the massive archivist. The ghost had overridden the system and vanished into the analog void once again.
Javert crushed the glow-stick in his fist, the chemical fluid leaking through his fingers, a cold and terrifying fury settling over his rigid features. He had the syndicate, but the architect had escaped the margin call.

Chapter 29: Javert’s Raid
The acrid smell of ionized copper, vaporized drywall, and burned silicon hung heavy in the freezing air of the Gorbeau complex. Inspector Javert holstered his analog sidearm, his face a mask of rigid, terrifying calm as the SEC tactical team switched to backup chemical lights.
The EMP had reduced the Thénardier Syndicate’s boiler room to a graveyard of dead hardware. The screens were black glass, the servers were fused blocks of metal, and the extortionists were completely neutralized.
Two tactical agents dragged the groaning kinetic enforcers to the hallway, zip-tying their wrists. Javert stepped over the shattered remains of a folding table and stood directly above Thénardier, who was cowering against the peeling wallpaper.

"I want a plea deal!" Thénardier babbled, his hands raised, shielding his face from the harsh green glare of the chemical light. "I have actionable intelligence! The man who just jumped out the window—he’s a whale! He possesses millions in unregistered cold storage. I can give you his physical description. I can give you the alias!"
"You have zero leverage, Thénardier," Javert said, his voice a low, mechanical drone that cut through the chaos of the raid. "You are an unregistered proxy operator. You attempted the physical extortion of an unidentified civilian. You are going to a federal server block."
"He’s not a civilian!" Thénardier shrieked, desperation entirely breaking his composure. "He’s the ghost! The giant from the Waterloo boiler room! It’s the same man who paid the fifty thousand in privacy coins for the Fantine girl ten years ago!"

Javert froze. The rhythmic, calculating machinery of his mind locked onto the data point.
For ten years, John Valjean had been a phantom IP address, an anomaly Javert chased through the dark web and offshore ledgers. But the ghost had just materialized in the physical world, right in front of him, to protect the child he had purchased. Valjean was no longer hiding behind a C# compiler. He was navigating the analog streets of the city.

"Sweep the adjacent units," Javert barked to the tactical commander, his eyes darting toward the shattered window. "The EMP radius is localized. The target is on foot. Lock down a ten-block radius. No biometric scans—he’s invisible to the grid. Use thermal and canine units. Find him."
In the pitch-black hallway, mere feet from the breach zone, Marius Pontmercy was pressed flat against the freezing concrete wall.
His heart hammered against his ribs. He had dropped his steel flashlight when the EMP detonated, and now the heavy tread of federal boots was moving toward his apartment door. If the SEC swept his micro-studio, they wouldn't just find a rogue day-trader. His room contained his father’s physical printed logs, the routing tables for the prime brokers, and the entire master plan for the ABC Forum’s upcoming gamma squeeze on Corinthe Technologies.

If they found that data, the barricade would fall before it was even built. Enjolras would be arrested for market manipulation, and the legacy hedge funds would win again.
Marius braced himself, preparing to launch himself at the nearest tactical agent in a suicidal bid to draw them away from his door.
Suddenly, a thin, calloused hand clamped over his mouth from the darkness.

"Don't be an idiot, rich boy," a voice hissed directly into his ear. It was Éponine.
Before Marius could react, she yanked him backward with surprising strength. She pulled him into a narrow, recessed alcove housing the building's physical fiber-optic maintenance shafts. She had pried the heavy steel grate off moments before the raid hit.
"Get in the routing shaft," she whispered, shoving him into the cramped, dust-choked tunnel just as a beam of federal tactical light swept across the hallway where he had been standing seconds before.

Marius scrambled backward into the dark, pulling his knees to his chest. Éponine slid in beside him, silently pulling the heavy steel grate back into place.
Through the slats of the grate, Marius watched in paralyzed silence as two heavily armored SEC agents kicked in the door to his apartment.
"Unit clear!" one of the agents shouted. "Hardware is completely fried. Looks like a low-level retail setup. The EMP caught it."

Because Valjean’s localized EMP had wiped the sector, Marius’s laptop was a dead brick. The digital models of the short squeeze were temporarily safe, locked inside fused silicon. But Marius knew the physical logs on his desk were fully legible.
"Secure the perimeter and move down to the lobby," the tactical commander’s voice echoed down the hall. "Leave the analog trash. We are hunting a Level 1 fugitive."
The agents turned and jogged down the corridor, abandoning the search of Marius’s room to join the physical dragnet closing around John Valjean.

In the cramped, suffocating darkness of the maintenance shaft, Éponine let out a shaky breath, her thin shoulder pressed against Marius’s chest. The smell of ozone and cheap synthetic nicotine clung to her.
"You owe me a lot of bandwidth for that, Pontmercy," she murmured, a cynical, defensive edge returning to her voice to mask how terrified she actually was.
"You saved the ABC," Marius breathed, the adrenaline slowly ebbing, leaving him exhausted. "You saved the whole forum, Éponine. Why?"
