While Grug was unconscious, the wanderer’s tribe had arrived from the Deep Southern Caves. They were pulling three massive wooden sleds. The sleds were overflowing with tens of thousands of Amethyst Geodes. They had mined an entire cavern of them.

The supply shock was instantaneous and apocalyptic.

The price of a Magic Purple Rock didn't just crash; it vaporized. From ninety fish, the bid instantly dropped to zero. Nobody wanted them. They were everywhere. They were just rocks again.

Borg was on his knees in the snow, sobbing, his heavy geode necklace dragging him down into the dirt. He had mortgaged his mud hut again at the absolute top. He was ruined. Lom was trying to eat a geode, crying.

Grug looked at the carnage. Then he looked down at his own hands. He was still holding his twelve Hard Money Shells. His wealth was perfectly intact.

He looked up at Thok, who was leaning casually on the oak branch.

"Thok," Grug whispered, a tear of pure gratitude freezing on his cheek. "You saved me from the top of the bubble."

"Grug brain go smash. Thok smash Grug brain back," Thok explained logically.

"It's the most beautiful risk management I've ever seen," Grug sniffled, rubbing his lump. He had survived the FOMO. But he realized that if the valley kept blowing itself up with these speculative bubbles, there would be no economy left to trade in. They needed a way to bet against the stupidity.

31: Short Selling

The lump on Grug’s forehead was roughly the size of a premium mammoth meatball, but it throbbed with the sweet rhythm of preserved capital.

He sat on his boulder, holding a cold piece of ice to his head, watching the traders of Cave Street slowly recover from the Purple Rock bubble. They were impoverished, exhausted, and deeply suspicious.

"Thok," Grug said, wincing as he spoke. "The valley is trapped in a cycle of pure stupidity. They see a shiny object, they bid the price to the moon, and then they lose everything when reality sets in. But I have realized a fundamental flaw in our market structure."

Thok looked up from whittling a stick. "Flaw is people have mushy brains?"

"Well, yes. But the structural flaw is that there is no way to bet against the mushy brains. If Borg buys a useless rock for ninety fish, my only option is to stand on the sidelines and laugh. Laughing is fun, Thok. But laughing does not generate yield. I want to profit from Borg’s terrible decisions. I want to monetize gravity."

Just then, a merchant from the High Valleys wandered onto the trading floor. He was carrying a woven basket filled with something Cave Street had never seen before: Blue Tundra Lilies.

They were breathtakingly beautiful. The petals shimmered with a vibrant, unnatural blue, and they smelled like sweet summer berries.

The valley, having learned absolutely nothing from the Purple Rock incident, instantly lost its collective mind.

"Me want flower!" Lom yelled, pushing to the front. "Will give three sticks!"

"Five sticks!" Borg roared, his FOMO flaring up like a chronic rash. "Borg needs pretty flower to make mud hut look nice!"

Within an hour, the Chief’s wife demanded a bouquet. The institutional mandate was set. The price of a single Blue Tundra Lily went parabolic, blasting past ten sticks, then fifteen, then twenty.

Grug watched the frenzy from his boulder. He knew the High Valley terrain. He knew the biology of the Blue Tundra Lily. It only bloomed for exactly forty-eight hours before it died, turned brown, and smelled strongly of rotting cabbage.

It was a literal decaying asset. And Cave Street was pricing it like Hard Money.

"It's a bubble, Thok," Grug whispered. "A biological bubble. And this time, we are going to pop it for profit."

Grug marched directly to Ugg’s central trading stall. Ugg, acting as the primary Market Maker, had naturally acquired a massive inventory of Lilies and was hoarding them to squeeze the price higher.

"Ugg," Grug said smoothly. "I want to borrow ten Blue Tundra Lilies."

Ugg frowned, his massive hand resting over his flowers. "Borrow? Why borrow? Grug buy."

"Because I am offering you passive income, Ugg," Grug pitched. "I will give you two premium pointy sticks right now as a 'borrowing fee.' I will take ten Lilies. And in exactly three days, I promise to return exactly ten Blue Tundra Lilies to you. You get your assets back, plus a guaranteed fee."

Ugg did the prehistoric math. He liked fees. He liked getting his stuff back. He didn't really care what Grug did with the flowers in the meantime.

"Deal," Ugg grunted, taking the two sticks and handing Grug ten pristine, beautiful Blue Lilies.

Grug immediately turned around and walked back to the screaming trading pit.

"LILIES FOR SALE!" Grug shouted. "TEN LILIES! I AM ASKING TWENTY-FIVE STICKS EACH!"

Borg, completely blinded by the floral hysteria, threw himself at Grug’s feet. "Borg take all! Two hundred and fifty sticks for ten Lilies! Borg will be flower king!"

Grug handed over the flowers and collected a massive, back-breaking haul of two hundred and fifty sticks.

He walked back to his boulder and sat down.

Thok stared at the mountain of sticks, his jaw hanging open. "Grug... Thok confused. Grug just sell Ugg's flowers to Borg. That is stealing. If Ugg find out, Ugg use club on Grug's head. Make matching lump."

"It is not stealing, Thok," Grug smiled, patting the pile of wealth. "It is a legally binding loan. I owe Ugg ten Lilies. Currently, I do not own any Lilies. I am 'Short' ten Lilies. My position is negative."

"Negative flowers?" Thok scratched his head. "How you have less than zero flower?"

"By owing them to a giant," Grug said. "Now, we wait for the fundamentals to assert themselves."

Forty-eight hours later, the biology of the Blue Tundra Lily executed its genetic programming.

Across the valley, the beautiful blue petals suddenly curled up, turned a sickening shade of brown, and began to emit an odor that could knock a buzzard off a meat wagon.

Cave Street woke up to the smell of rotting cabbage.

Panic ensued. The Chief’s wife threw her bouquet into the river. The prestige of the flower vanished instantly. The demand curve didn't just shift; it jumped off a cliff.

"Sell flowers! Sell flowers!" Borg screamed on the trading floor, holding ten limp, brown, foul-smelling stalks. "Two sticks! One stick! Please! They smell so bad!"

Nobody wanted them. The bid was zero.

Grug casually strolled down from his boulder, holding a single pointy stick. He approached a weeping Borg.
