The heavy lock on Thénardier’s door clicked shut. The server closet door banged open, and the heavy, synchronized footsteps of two kinetic enforcers stepped into the room.

"You're right, Blanc, or whatever fake name you use to hide your legacy wealth," Thénardier spat. "We aren't a charity. We're a tax. You’re sitting in an air-gapped room with two men who get paid by the hour to break fingers. You are going to pull out your hardware wallet, you are going to type in your seed phrase, and you are going to transfer five million dollars in Bitcoin to my escrow address. Or you don't leave this room."

There was a long, terrifying silence from the older man.

"I do not carry digital hardware," Valjean said simply.

"Check his pockets!" Thénardier yelled.

Marius heard the scuffle—the enforcers lunging forward to physically restrain the old man. But the sounds that followed did not match Thénardier’s script. There was no cry of pain from the victim. Instead, there was a brutal, bone-crunching crack, followed by the heavy thud of a two-hundred-pound enforcer hitting the linoleum floor.

"He broke his arm!" Madame Thénardier shrieked in absolute panic. "Shoot him!"

"Hold him down, you idiot!" Thénardier roared.

Marius didn't wait to hear the rest. He dropped the headset, grabbed his heavy steel flashlight, and stepped out into the grim, flickering hallway of the Gorbeau complex. He approached Thénardier’s door, assessing the cheap locking mechanism. He couldn't hack a physical deadbolt, but he had physics on his side. He stepped back, bracing his shoulder, preparing to kick the door completely off its hinges and plunge into the violent chaos to save the father of the girl he loved.

But before Marius's boot could strike the wood, the hallway plunged into absolute darkness.

The building's power grid didn't just fail; it was surgically severed. At the end of the corridor, the red laser sights of four federal tactical rifles pierced the gloom, painting the center of Thénardier’s door.

Javert had found them.

Chapter 28: The Ambush

In the pitch-black hallway of the Gorbeau complex, Marius Pontmercy froze, his boot inches from the door. Four crimson laser sights sliced through the gloom, converging precisely on the center of Thénardier’s cheap locking mechanism. At the far end of the corridor, the heavy, synchronized tread of federal tactical boots advanced with ruthless, algorithmic precision.

Inspector Javert had not come for the ABC Forum, nor had he come for a low-level rug-pull. He had tracked the encrypted communications of the dark-web enforcers, and his surveillance architecture had recognized the anomalous, off-grid footprint of the target they were hired to extort.

"Federal regulators!" a mechanized voice boomed through a localized acoustic projector, vibrating the concrete walls. "Level zero breach protocol. Stand clear of the blast radius!"

Inside the apartment, the syndicate’s extortion plot violently unraveled.

The second kinetic enforcer, realizing the man in the wool sweater had just shattered his partner's arm, drew a heavy, unregistered thermal-pistol. Thénardier scrambled backward over a folding table, screaming in panic as the federal breach warning echoed through the walls.

"Kill him and take the physical hardware!" Thénardier shrieked.

John Valjean did not flinch. He had spent ten years anticipating this exact intersection of violence and federal pursuit. He did not possess a hardware wallet, but he possessed something infinitely more dangerous in a hyper-connected world.

Valjean reached deep into the lining of his heavy archivist's coat and pulled out a densely packed, copper-coiled cylinder the size of a fist. It was a custom-built, localized EMP—a high-capacitance electromagnetic pulse generator engineered from the scavenged remnants of the Convent’s analog power grid.

The enforcer leveled the thermal-pistol at Valjean’s chest, his finger tightening on the electronic trigger.

Valjean depressed the mechanical detonator on the cylinder.

With a sickening, high-frequency pop, a concentrated wave of electromagnetic radiation violently expanded through the room. It did not create a fireball or a shockwave, but the devastation was absolute.

Every microchip, circuit board, and silicon array within a thirty-foot radius catastrophically fried.

The enforcer’s thermal-pistol sparked and went entirely dead, its electronic firing pin fused to the casing. Thénardier’s frequency jammer exploded in a shower of blue sparks. In the hallway, the federal tactical lasers vanished instantly. The digital optics on the SEC breach-team’s helmets blacked out, and the magnetic deadbolt on Thénardier’s door disengaged with a dull clank.

Absolute, analog darkness consumed the sector.

In the sudden, blinding confusion, Valjean moved with the terrifying, predatory speed of his youth. He lunged forward, grabbing the heavy folding table, and drove it directly into the second enforcer, pinning him against the drywall. Without breaking stride, Valjean grabbed the heavy steel frame of the room's single window. The Faraday mesh—now useless without its electrical current—tore easily from the brickwork as Valjean shattered the glass with his elbow.

Outside the door, Marius pressed himself flat against the hallway wall as the federal breaching charge detonated. The door was blown inward in a cloud of splintered wood and pulverized drywall.

Javert stepped through the smoke, his standard-issue analog sidearm drawn, sweeping the room with a chemical glow-stick.

The beam illuminated the absolute wreckage of the boiler room. The two enforcers lay groaning on the floor. Madame Thénardier was weeping in the corner, clutching a fried tablet. Thénardier himself was backed against the wall, his hands raised, babbling incoherently about federal immunity and anonymous whales.
