"Where is fifth shell?" Ugg whispered.

He started tearing apart the pelts. He threw sticks across the cave. "WHERE IS SHELL?!" Ugg roared, tearing the cave apart in a frantic search.

Grug backed away slowly. The audit had succeeded in finding a discrepancy, but it had also triggered a massive liquidity crisis. Ugg had lost 20% of his hard currency reserves, and he was currently destroying his own cave in a panic.

The audit had not restored trust. It had just proved that even the biggest bank in the valley couldn't keep track of its own money.

Part 23: Quantitative Easing

Ugg’s lost Shell sent shockwaves through the valley.

The Market Maker was short on his reserves, and the panic was contagious. If Ugg couldn’t keep track of his Hard Money, how could anyone trust him to honor a trade? The velocity of the Shell—already painfully slow because of hoarding—ground to a complete halt.

"The money supply is shrinking," Grug reported to the Chief, pointing to a very sad, downward-sloping fat-torch chart on the Magic Wall. "Because of Ugg's 'accounting error' and the general paranoia, there are now effectively zero Shells in circulation. The economy is freezing over, and winter hasn't even started."

The Chief, who was currently trying to use a large leaf as a bib, looked annoyed. "Find more Shells."

"I can't," Grug sighed. "I dredged that freezing river for a week. There were only twelve. Now there are eleven. It’s a deflationary death spiral. Prices are plummeting because nobody has the currency to buy anything."

The Chief stood up, his belly jiggling. He did not understand deflationary death spirals, but he understood that when trading stopped, he stopped receiving his 'Chiefly Tribute' of premium berries.

"Chief will fix," he announced.

The next morning, the Chief led a small expedition out of the valley, over the eastern ridge, and down into a newly discovered gorge. Grug and Thok trailed behind, skeptical.

At the bottom of the gorge, the Chief pointed triumphantly. "Look!"

Grug gasped.

It wasn't a river. It was an ancient, dried-up seabed, exposed by a recent landslide. And it was absolutely covered in shells.

Not just any shells. They were identical to the twelve rare, fossilized, pearlescent Shells that made up the valley's entire monetary base. There were thousands of them. Millions, perhaps.

"The Motherlode," Grug whispered, horrified.

"Chief finds new money!" the Chief cheered. He scooped up two massive handfuls of the precious shells. "Tribe is rich again! Economy fixed!"

"No, no, NO!" Grug yelled, grabbing the Chief’s arms. "You can't do this! You can't just inject massive amounts of liquidity into the market! It will destroy the value of the existing Shells!"

The Chief shook Grug off easily. "Grug say tribe needs more money. Chief finds more money. It is... what you call it? A stimulus."

"It's Quantitative Easing!" Grug shrieked. "You are flooding the market with unbacked currency! You are debasing the money supply!"

"Chief is easing the sadness," the Chief corrected, already filling a large woven basket with shells. "Go tell tribe. Tell them Chief brings wealth."

By high noon, the Chief returned to Cave Street dragging three overflowing baskets of shiny, pearlescent Shells.

The trading floor, which had been dead silent, erupted.

"Free Shells!" Lom screamed, diving toward the baskets.

"Chief is best Chief!" Borg yelled, grabbing handfuls of the previously ultra-rare currency.

The Chief stood by the Big Fire, literally tossing handfuls of Shells into the air like a Pleistocene rap star making it rain. "Spend! Trade! Be happy!"

For the first two hours, it was absolute euphoria. Everyone felt incredibly wealthy. Thok bought a premium mammoth steak from Ugg for ten Shells—a price that would have been unthinkable yesterday. Borg traded fifty Shells for a new, aerodynamically balanced spear.

The velocity of money was astronomical. The trading pit was deafening.

But Grug just sat on his boulder, holding his head in his hands, watching the fat-torch charts on his mental blackboard explode into chaotic scribbles.

By sunset, the inevitable reality of supply and demand violently reasserted itself.

Ugg, having sold five steaks for fifty Shells, realized something terrifying. He had a mountain of shiny shells... but he couldn't eat them. And when he went to buy sticks from Borg, Borg looked at Ugg's handful of Shells and sneered.

"Borg already have hundred Shells," Borg grunted, kicking a pile of them near his fire. "Shells are everywhere. Shells are trash. Borg want fifty Shells for one stick."

Ugg’s jaw dropped. "Yesterday, stick was one Shell!"

"Yesterday, Shell was rare," Borg replied logically. "Today, Chief made Shell common. If you want stick, you pay inflation price."

Ugg roared in frustration. He had traded tangible, edible meat for a currency that had been diluted into oblivion in a single afternoon.

The Great Shell Crash of '26 (BC) was swift and brutal. The newly minted fiat-shells littered the ground, completely ignored. The valley had learned the hard way that when the central authority controls the money printer (or in this case, the dried seabed), your savings are never safe.

"We need an asset they can't print, can't find, and can't fake," Grug muttered, kicking a worthless Shell into the fire. "We need something that takes actual time to produce."

Part 24: Day Trading vs. Generation Trading

The valley’s economy had collapsed under the weight of the Chief’s reckless Quantitative Easing. The pearlescent Shells were now primarily used by children to skip across the frozen river.

Cave Street was quiet. The fast-paced, high-stress world of Day Trading—scalping melting ice, arbitraging berries, and trading sticks on margin—had lost its appeal. The assets were too volatile, and the currency was too easily manipulated.

Grug, nursing a headache from the recent macroeconomic whiplash, sat by the Big Fire next to Elder Oob. The ancient caveman was, as usual, asleep.

"Oob," Grug sighed, poking the old man. "The market is broken. Short-term trading is a fool's game. The spread eats you, the slippage crushes you, and the Chief prints away your profits. How did you survive for forty-two years without day trading?"

Oob opened one crusty eye. "Oob not trade days. Oob trade generations."

Grug frowned. "Generation trading? What is your asset class?"

Oob slowly pointed a gnarled finger toward the far end of the valley, where a steep, treacherous path led up to the high mountain passes. "See path?"

"Yes."

"When Oob was young man, Oob planted small, hard seed near path." Oob closed his eye again, clearly exhausted by the explanation. "Seed grew. Now is big tree. Tree drops sweet nuts every autumn. Oob eat nuts. Oob live long."
