"I speak five languages fluently. I understand the psychological profiles of every central bank governor from Washington to Beijing. I can teach you how to collapse a sovereign currency, how to structure a hostile takeover through decentralized ghost entities, and how to execute a run on a bank without ever sitting at a terminal." Faria leaned forward, his eyes locking onto Edmond’s. "I will give you the 'why'. And in exchange, you will be my hands. You will dig."

"I agree," Edmond said, extending his hand.

Faria gripped it. The old man’s skin was like dry parchment, but his grip was iron.

"Then the curriculum begins," Faria whispered, pulling a crude, hand-carved chisel from beneath his mattress and pressing it into Edmond’s palm. "Lesson one: The anatomy of a systemic collapse. We start digging at midnight. And while you dig, we will deconstruct the men who framed you, trade by trade, lie by lie."

Chapter 12:

The rhythmic scrape of the handmade chisel against concrete was the only sound in the cell, a metronome keeping time for an intellectual autopsy. Edmond's muscles burned as he chipped away at the foundational mortar, his face coated in a fine layer of gray dust. Behind him, Faria sat cross-legged on his cot, his eyes closed, listening to the data.

"In forensic accounting," Faria rasped, his voice echoing softly over the sound of the chisel, "when a balance sheet collapses overnight, we do not look at the numbers that disappeared. We look at the accounts that suddenly swelled. Cui bono, Edmond. Who captured the alpha of your destruction?"

Edmond paused, wiping sweat from his eyes with a dirty forearm. "No one captured anything. It was an anonymous whistleblower tip. A routing error I executed on behalf of my boss, Leclère."

"Leclère was in a medically induced coma," Faria corrected smoothly. "A dying man does not submit a whistleblower report to the SEC. You were a twenty-two-year-old kid who was just handed the keys to three billion dollars in proprietary capital. So, let us audit the ledger of your life. Who assumed your desk?"

"Danglars," Edmond said, the name tasting like ash. "The Chief Risk Officer. But Danglars couldn't have sent the tip. He didn't have the technical clearance to bypass the firm's internal compliance software. It had to be routed through an offshore Tor node to reach the CFTC emergency portal undetected."

Faria opened his eyes, a predatory gleam in the dim light. "So Danglars had the motive, but lacked the infrastructure. A classic supply-chain bottleneck. Tell me, Edmond, did you possess any other assets? Tangible or intangible, that someone else coveted?"

Edmond’s chest tightened. He set the chisel down. "Mercédès. My fiancé."

"An undervalued asset in your eyes, perhaps, but a highly coveted one in the open market," Faria murmured. "Who was bidding against you?"

"Fernand Mondego. We grew up together. He’s an institutional broker now. He routes trades through offshore networks. He has access to..." Edmond’s voice trailed off. The variables were snapping into place, forming a terrifyingly clear algorithm.

"Fernand had the routing infrastructure," Faria finished for him. "Danglars had the access to your terminal logs. A joint venture. A syndicate formed to short-sell your life. Danglars acquires the desk; Fernand acquires the girl. A perfectly hedged conspiracy."

Edmond stared at the concrete wall, his breathing shallow. "They framed me. They sat at my engagement party and drank my champagne while the feds were inbound."

"Yes," Faria said softly. "But they are merely retail traders in this conspiracy. They provided the tip. They did not have the power to circumvent due process, classify you as a Tier-One terrorist, and bury you in a black site without a trial. That requires institutional leverage. Tell me about the regulator. The man who interrogated you."

"Gérard de Villefort," Edmond replied, his fists clenching at his sides. "Deputy Director of the CFTC. He believed me, Faria. He looked at the unredacted routing hash and he promised me protection as a cooperating witness."

"And what was in that unredacted hash, Edmond?" Faria leaned forward, his walking stick gripped tightly in his skeletal hands. "What data point caused a rising star in the federal government to instantly initiate a covert rendition?"

"It was the ultimate beneficiary of the dark pool transfer," Edmond explained, pacing the small cell. "A shell corporation called Noirtier Holdings. The guarantor was listed as P.A. Noirtier."

The silence that followed was absolute.

Faria did not move. His ancient eyes widened, staring at Edmond with a mixture of absolute shock and cold, terrifying clarity. Then, a dry, rattling laugh erupted from the old man's chest, echoing off the stone walls until it devolved into a violent coughing fit.
