In zero gravity, unhedged momentum is a killer. The massive recoil of the kinetic rifle acted like a thruster. Without gravity or friction to anchor his feet, the force of the shots violently hurled the enforcer backward, sending him spinning out of control into the curved glass bulkhead.

Ethan dodged the stray rounds, twisting his body in mid-air to close the gap with the second enforcer.

The second guard was smarter. He dropped his rifle to avoid the recoil penalty and drew a high-frequency combat blade, kicking off the ceiling to launch himself directly at Ethan.

"Leverage," Ethan grunted, grabbing the enforcer’s incoming wrist.

In zero-G, traditional martial arts meant nothing; it was entirely about fulcrums and momentum. Ethan used the guard's own forward velocity against him, pulling the cyborg's arm past his center of mass and driving a knee squarely into the enforcer's chest plate.

The impact spun them both wildly in the center of the room. Ethan locked his legs around the guard's waist, drew his sidearm, and drove the butt of the plasma pistol directly into the neural-processor at the base of the cyborg's neck. The guard's eyes rolled back, and he went limp, drifting away like discarded space debris.

Ethan pushed off the floating body, orienting himself toward the pedestal.

Sterling hadn't engaged. The architect of the Omega Protocol had used the zero-gravity chaos to pull himself toward a secondary emergency airlock, his silver suit pristine.

"You're fighting the trend, Ethan!" Sterling yelled, gripping the airlock handle. "Even if you breach the core, you can't stop the algorithm! It's self-executing!"

Sterling slammed the airlock button. The heavy durasteel door hissed shut, sealing him safely away in the station's escape corridor.

"Ethan, you have thirty seconds before the station's AI reboots the localized gravity!" Cipher screamed in his ear. "If the Yakuza collateral isn't uploaded before the reboot, the firewall will permanently lock!"

Ethan twisted in the air, swimming through the void toward the metallic pedestal. He grabbed the edge of the console to anchor himself. He pulled the 4TB Samsung external enclosure from his jacket, the cord floating like a mechanical snake.

He jammed the USB-four connector into the port.

UPLOADING PROOF OF LIQUIDITY.

The black glass of the core flashed brilliantly.

ANALYZING ESCROW. 10,000,000,000 NEO-YEN CONFIRMED.

With a pneumatic hiss, the massive pane of black glass split down the middle and rapidly retracted into the walls.

Beyond it lay the heart of The Pinnacle—the quantum server core. It was a massive, spherical chamber lined with glowing, super-cooled processing nodes. This was the engine of the Omega Protocol.

"I'm in," Ethan breathed.

He gripped the edges of the doorway and launched himself inside just as the gravity plating violently kicked back online.

Ethan crashed hard onto the floor of the core, the breath knocked from his lungs. Behind him, the system registered that the ten-billion Neo-Yen was a synthetic carry trade. The localized risk-management algorithm panicked.

The black glass doors violently slammed shut, sealing completely. A series of heavy, magnetic locking bars slid into place with a definitive, terrifying CLANG.

Ethan sat up, groaning, and looked at the sealed door. He was in. But there was no handle on the inside.

"Ethan," Cipher’s voice came through the comms, laced with dread. "You bypassed the firewall, but the internal AI just triggered a Class-1 quarantine. You're locked inside the core."

Ethan slowly stood up, looking at the towering, glowing pillars of quantum servers. The sheer processing power in the room was generating an intense, freezing hum.

"I didn't come here for a quick scalp, Cipher," Ethan said, pulling a specialized data-spike from his tactical belt. He walked toward the master terminal in the center of the room. "I came here to blow up the account."

CHAPTER 19: Bear Market

The ambient temperature inside the quantum core was hovering just above freezing, a necessity to keep the massive server pillars operating without latency. Ethan’s breath plumed in the blue-lit air as he approached the master terminal, the heavy durasteel doors sealed shut behind him.

He drove his data-spike directly into the console. His wrist terminal flared to life, projecting a localized holographic interface.

"Cipher, I'm plugged into the main artery," Ethan said, shivering as the cold began to bite through his thin, bespoke suit. "Upload the kill-switch."

"Injecting the virus now," Cipher’s voice came through, distorted by the heavy magnetic shielding of the core. "But we have a massive problem. The Omega Protocol is protected by a hyper-aggressive institutional hedging algorithm. Every time I try to inject our malicious short-sell code to crash the system, the AI automatically merges it with an opposing long position to neutralize the threat. It’s netting the ledger before the virus can execute."

Ethan watched the holographic order book. Cipher was right; the system was too efficient. Every attack was instantly absorbed and hedged.

"We can't beat an institutional auto-merge from the inside," Ethan realized. "Cipher, downgrade my access terminal. Route the connection through a retail-tier CFD bridge."

"A retail bridge? The execution speed will drop drastically!"

"Do it," Ethan commanded. "Institutional dark pools automatically merge opposing trades to save margin. But retail CFD architecture doesn't net the ledger. The positions remain completely independent. If we use that framework, I can isolate the specific smart-contract holding the Omega Protocol’s defense matrix. I will just select the individual position and manually click to close it."

"Creating the retail tunnel now," Cipher typed furiously. "You’re going to have a one-second window when the position closes before the institutional AI realizes the bridge is spoofed. Get ready to click."

Meanwhile, three decks down in the grand ballroom, the station's alert sirens began to wail.

Viper didn't hesitate. She dropped her crystal champagne flute, reached into the slit of her crimson ballistic-weave gown, and drew her twin tactical knives.

"Party’s over, elites," Viper muttered.

Three augmented enforcers burst through the VIP doors, kinetic rifles raised. The shadow-brokers screamed, scattering in zero-G panic as the localized gravity began to fluctuate.

Viper moved like a ghost. She vaulted off a floating baccarat table, launching herself across the room. She slashed the primary power conduit on the wall, plunging the ballroom into darkness illuminated only by the massive OLED screens displaying tranquil terrestrial forests.

Using the flickering light of the projected trees, Viper systematically dismantled the enforcer squad, her blades flashing in the shadows. She didn't stay to admire her work. She sprinted down the corridor toward the central spire, leaving a trail of disabled cyborgs in her wake.

Back in the core, the temperature plummeted further. Frost was forming on Ethan’s eyelashes. The retail CFD interface materialized on his HUD.

"I have the Omega defense position isolated," Ethan said, his fingers hovering over the holographic terminal. The cold was making his joints stiff.

"Execute!" Cipher yelled.

Ethan tapped the screen, manually clicking to close the specific position.

The institutional hedge shattered. A massive gap opened in the order book. In that single microsecond, Cipher’s kill-switch virus flooded into the core, attaching itself to the root code of the Omega Protocol.

The server pillars instantly shifted from a calm blue to a violent, strobing red.

CRITICAL LEDGER FAILURE DETECTED. INITIATING THERMAL PURGE.

"Cipher, the virus is in, but the system is purging!" Ethan shouted, backing away from the console as thick, blinding white clouds of liquid nitrogen began venting from the ceiling.

"The core is trying to freeze the hardware to preserve the data!" Cipher warned. "Ethan, you have to get out of there! The temperature will drop to absolute zero in twenty seconds!"

"The doors are magnetically sealed!" Ethan coughed, his lungs burning as the freezing gas filled the room. He collapsed to his knees, his vision blurring.

Outside the core, Viper sprinted into the antechamber. She saw the black glass doors sealed tight, glowing with frost.

"Ethan!" she screamed, slapping a specialized plasma-breaching charge directly onto the center of the glass. She didn't bother retreating to a safe distance. She hit the detonator and turned her shoulder to absorb the shockwave.

The blast shattered the super-cooled glass into a million jagged fragments.

Viper dove through the smoke and freezing vapor, grabbing Ethan by his tactical harness and dragging his half-frozen body out into the antechamber just as the core behind them completely crystallized in a tomb of solid ice.

Ethan gasped for air, the warmth of the corridor slowly thawing his lungs. "We did it... the Omega Protocol is frozen."

Viper helped him to his feet, her expression grim as she looked out the antechamber window at the curvature of the Earth.

"We froze the algorithm, Ethan," Viper said, pointing at the station's orbital telemetry on a nearby monitor. "But Sterling just manually severed the station's gyroscopic stabilizers. We're not in orbit anymore. We're in freefall."
