To Javert, empathy was a defect. Altruism was merely a vulnerability in the human codebase. By taking the child, Valjean had tethered his massive, untouchable intellect to a fragile, physical liability. A ghost could slip through the digital net, but a man carrying a traumatized, malnourished ten-year-old girl required food, shelter, and analog infrastructure. They could not travel fast, and they could not stay invisible forever.
"He is weighed down," Javert whispered to himself, a chilling, triumphant realization settling over him.

Javert turned to the tactical commander. "Seize these servers. Arrest them both. But reroute our primary surveillance assets. Stop scanning the blockchain and the high-speed transit hubs. He isn't moving through the network anymore. He is on foot. Check the thermal imaging in the analog blind spots—storm drains, abandoned data centers, legacy grid tunnels."
Javert looked out the shattered door of the boiler room into the freezing rain, his eyes tracing the dark, forgotten corners of the city.
"The architect has logged off," Javert said. "We hunt him in the physical world now."

Chapter 16, detailing Valjean and Cosette's survival in the Gorbeau district and how they evade Javert's analog search
The Gorbeau district was a sprawling, concrete graveyard of obsolete bandwidth. Built during the first massive web-hosting boom at the turn of the century, its block-long windowless warehouses had been gutted and abandoned when the tech sector migrated entirely to decentralized cloud infrastructure. To the modern smart-city grid, Gorbeau was a dead zone—a massive, unmapped blind spot devoid of fiber-optic nodes, surveillance cameras, and cellular repeaters.
For John Valjean, it was a fortress.
Deep inside the cavernous hull of Data Center 4, Valjean had constructed a sanctuary within a stripped-out server aisle. He had paid an underground scavenger a premium in untraceable silver coins to acquire analog survival gear: a kerosene heater, heavy thermal sleeping bags, a portable water filtration system, and a battery-powered shortwave radio.

He had also bought physical, paper books.
Cosette sat cross-legged on a foam mat, staring in quiet bewilderment at a worn copy of a fairy tale. Her small fingers instinctively swiped across the textured paper, expecting the text to scroll, the screen to refresh, or a notification to ping. When nothing happened, she looked up at Valjean, her eyes wide with a mixture of wonder and residual anxiety.
"The words don't move," she whispered. "And there's no engagement counter. How do they know if I'm reading it?"

Valjean sat heavily on a rusted server chassis, his massive frame aching from the physical toll of the last forty-eight hours. He smiled, a profound, quiet warmth breaking through the hardened lines of his face.
"They don't know, Cosette," he said softly. "The book expects nothing from you. It doesn't track your eyes, and it doesn't grade your attention. You read it only for yourself. The story belongs entirely to you."
Over the next few weeks, the toxic programming of the boiler room began to slowly drain from the child. The harsh, blue-light pallor of her skin was replaced by the healthy flush of actual sleep and warm, unrationed meals cooked over a butane stove. She stopped flinching when Valjean stood up. She stopped reciting algorithmic trading slogans in her sleep. In the absolute, disconnected silence of the data center, Valjean watched her become a child.

But outside their concrete sanctuary, the hunt was escalating.
Javert had recognized the failure of the digital dragnet. If Valjean was not logging onto the network, the SEC’s algorithmic bloodhounds were useless. Javert pivoted his strategy with terrifying efficiency, utilizing federal emergency powers to commandeer the city’s fleet of autonomous maintenance and security drones. He stripped them of their standard optical sensors and retrofitted them with military-grade FLIR (Forward-Looking Infrared) thermal imaging.
The physical sweep of Montreuil-sur-Mer’s analog blind spots began.
On a bitterly cold Tuesday night, the sweep reached the Gorbeau district. Valjean was monitoring the police frequencies on the shortwave radio when the static was suddenly broken by the distinct, high-pitched whine of quadcopter rotors vibrating through the concrete walls.

"Thermal Sweep, Sector 4," a mechanized voice crackled over the radio. "Grid search initiated."
Valjean moved with silent, lethal precision. He extinguished the kerosene heater, plunging their makeshift room into absolute darkness.
"Cosette," Valjean whispered, pulling two heavy mylar thermal emergency blankets from his pack. "Do not speak. Do not move. Wrap this completely around yourself."

The child, sensing the return of the danger she thought they had escaped, obeyed instantly, her small frame vanishing beneath the reflective silver foil. Valjean covered himself, pulling her close against his chest as they crouched beneath the hollowed-out steel chassis of a mainframe rack.
Outside, a heavy mechanical thud shook the building. An autonomous, heavily armored quadruped drone—a "Dog"—had breached the loading dock doors, accompanied by three aerial quadcopters.
Through the perforated steel of the server rack, Valjean watched the eerie, pulsing blue lights of the aerial drones as they glided silently down the central corridor of the data center. Their FLIR cameras swept the room, painting the freezing concrete in dark blues and purples on Javert’s remote monitors miles away, searching for the bright yellow-white bloom of human body heat.

The mylar blankets trapped their thermal radiation, but Valjean knew it was not a perfect shield. If a drone lingered too long, the ambient heat escaping from their breath would eventually register a micro-fluctuation in the freezing air.
A quadcopter hovered directly outside their server aisle, its sensor gimbal rotating with a mechanical click. It paused, aiming directly at the rusted chassis where they hid.
Valjean closed his eyes, calculating the variables. He had exactly three seconds before the sensor burned through the thermal masking.

Reaching out blindly in the dark, his hand found the heavy, exposed copper wiring of the building's decommissioned emergency capacitor bank, which he had manually re-routed to an old diesel backup generator two days prior. He threw the rusted mechanical breaker switch.
With a deafening, concussive roar, the massive diesel generator two floors below ground violently roared to life.
The sudden surge of raw, unshielded electricity overloaded the ancient HVAC exhaust pipes running directly through the ceiling of their aisle. A massive cloud of residual industrial steam and superheated air violently vented into the room.
