The thoughts didn't spark rage anymore. They barely registered as data points. Edmond was experiencing the ultimate margin call of the soul. He was a zero-balance account, wiped clean by a corrupt broker, and he was finally ready to log off.

By the sixth day of his fast, the heavy titanium collar around his neck began to pulse with a dull, rhythmic yellow light. His core temperature had dropped to dangerous levels. His resting heart rate—tracked meticulously by the black site’s biometric servers—dipped below thirty-eight beats per minute. The Warden’s algorithm would soon flag him for intravenous feeding, but Edmond knew from his mathematical modeling that if he could just push his heart rate down five more points, he would slip into a fatal arrhythmia before the medical team could breach Sector D.

He focused on slowing his breathing. Inhale... hold... exhale into the void.

He felt the cold creeping up from his extremities, wrapping around his chest like a heavy lead blanket. The toxic green glow of the terminal faded into a soft, inviting gray. The deafening silence of the black site finally felt peaceful. He was slipping under the moving average. The line was going flat.

Scrape.

Edmond’s eyelids twitched, but he did not open them. Auditory hallucinations were a known variable of severe caloric deficit.

Scrape... thud.

His heart skipped a beat, spiking to forty-two. He held his breath. The silence rushed back in, heavy and absolute. He let out a dry, rattling exhale, preparing to sink back into the gray void.

Scrape... scrape... tap.

Edmond opened his eyes. The harsh LED light blinded him for a second. He rolled his head to the side, his cheek pressing against the freezing, damp concrete of the wall beside his slab.

Tap. Tap. Scrape.

It was not a hallucination. The sound was muffled, vibrating through inches of reinforced cinderblock, but it possessed something no hallucination ever could: a distinct, mechanical cadence. It was a pattern. An intentional, physical anomaly breaking the perfect isolation of the cell.

Edmond dragged his skeletal frame off the slab. His legs gave out instantly, sending him crashing onto the floor. The titanium collar flashed a warning red as his heart rate spiked to ninety, adrenaline suddenly flooding a system that had been preparing for death.

He crawled across the floor, dragging himself toward the sound. He pressed his ear flat against the freezing wall.

Tap... tap... pause. Tap... tap... pause.

Someone was tunneling. Someone was actively exploiting a structural inefficiency in the black site’s architecture.

Edmond’s hands shook violently. He searched the floor frantically, his fingers brushing against the hardened, dried edge of a four-day-old nutrient paste tray. He grabbed it, gripping the hardened plastic edge like a lifeline. He raised a trembling arm, placed the plastic against the cinderblock, and struck the wall.

Tap. Tap. Tap.

He held his breath, his ear pressed so hard against the stone that it ached. The silence stretched for ten agonizing seconds. Had they heard him? Had he imagined the entire sequence?

From the other side of the impenetrable concrete, a deliberate, rhythmic answer echoed back.

Tap. Tap. Tap.

Edmond dropped the plastic tray. A dry, ragged sob tore from his throat. The bear market was over. He wasn't alone in the dark pool anymore.

Chapter 10:

The margin call of the soul had been rejected. Edmond scrambled across the freezing concrete floor, his hands trembling as he reached the cluster of untouched nutrient trays. He scooped the gray, hardened paste with his bare fingers and shoved it into his mouth. It tasted of chemicals and ash, but to his starving, deleveraging body, it was a sudden, violent infusion of pure capital. He choked it down, forcing his atrophied stomach to accept the liquidity.

He crawled back to the wall, pressing his ear against the damp cinderblock. The scraping had stopped, replaced by a cautious, heavy silence.

Edmond picked up the hardened plastic edge of the tray. He needed to establish a baseline, a handshake protocol to verify the entity on the other side. He struck the wall.

Tap. Tap.
