"You don't understand the fundamentals, Thok!" Grug snapped, clutching his gourds. "It's just a temporary dip! Strong support at four sticks! It will bounce back!"
It did not bounce back. It was a scorching afternoon. The gourds sat in the sun. They began to swell. By 3:00 PM, the price was two sticks. By 4:00 PM, Ugg threw up behind a bush and publicly declared the milk "evil."
The price plummeted to zero. Then, the gourds began to explode from the fermented pressure, spraying Grug with rancid, sticky milk. He had held his asset until it literally blew up in his face. He lost everything.
Sitting in the river later that evening, trying to scrub the smell of sour milk out of his fur, Grug had a revelation.

"The problem is not the market," Grug muttered, shivering. "The problem is me. My brain cannot accept a small loss, so my ego forces me to take a massive one."
He needed a mechanism that would execute a sale against his own will.
The next morning, Grug approached Thok. He handed Thok a thick, sturdy piece of oak firewood.
"Thok, you have a new job," Grug instructed. "You are my Stop-Loss Protocol."
Thok swung the piece of wood. "What Thok do?"

"I am going to buy a bundle of premium obsidian spearheads," Grug explained. "I am buying them at five berries each. If the price goes up, we celebrate. But... if the price drops to three berries, you are going to sell them."
"What if Grug say no?" Thok asked. "What if Grug say 'it will bounce back'?"
"If I say that," Grug said solemnly, pointing to the piece of oak, "you hit my hand with that stick until I drop the obsidian. Then you take it and sell it for three berries. Do not listen to my words. Listen to the price."
Thok grinned. He loved protocols that involved blunt force. "Thok understand."
When the market opened, Grug executed his trade. He bought ten obsidian spearheads for fifty berries.

Almost immediately, bad news hit the floor. A rumor spread that Borg had found a whole cave full of obsidian just over the ridge. Panic selling began.
"Obsidian at four berries!" someone yelled.
Grug felt a bead of sweat roll down his face. "Hold," he whispered. "It's just FUD (Fear, Uncertainty, and Dung). It will hold at four."
"Obsidian at three berries!" Lom shouted across the fire.
The Stop-Loss limit was triggered.
"Thok, sell!" Thok stepped forward, reaching for the spearheads in Grug's arms.

"Wait!" Grug shrieked, his emotional brain completely hijacking his logic. "The fat-torch chart shows a double-bottom forming! Look at the RSI (Relative Stone Index)! Give me ten more minutes!" Grug clutched the spearheads to his chest.
Thok didn't blink. He raised the piece of oak firewood and brought it down sharply on Grug’s knuckles.
"OW!" Grug yelped, dropping the stones.
Thok scooped them up, marched over to Ugg, and sold the entire bundle for thirty berries. He walked back and handed the berries to a whimpering, nursing Grug.
"You lost twenty berries," Thok grunted. "Thok executed Stop-Loss."
"You barbarian!" Grug cried, blowing on his bruised hand. "It was about to bounce! You cost me the recovery!"

Ten minutes later, Borg arrived with a wheelbarrow made of logs, overflowing with thousands of obsidian spearheads. The market was flooded. The price of obsidian instantly dropped to half a berry. People were throwing them in the river just to make space.
Grug stopped blowing on his hand. He looked at the thirty berries Thok had saved, then at the completely worthless pile of obsidian Borg had brought.
If Grug had held on, he would have lost all fifty berries. The Stop-Loss had hurt his pride (and his knuckles), but it had preserved his capital to trade another day.

Grug looked at Thok, tears of gratitude welling in his eyes. "Thok... you are the greatest financial instrument I have ever invented. Here, take a berry as a management fee."
From that day on, every successful trader on Cave Street employed a large man with a stick to stand behind them. The "Thok-Loss" became the industry standard for risk management.

Part 18: The Flash Crash
Cave Street was a model of efficiency. The Thok-Loss protocol (blunt-force risk management) had stabilized portfolios, and Ugg’s aggressive market-making ensured tight spreads. Trading was buzzing. Wealth was accumulating.
It was a Tuesday afternoon. The market was trading a steady volume of premium sticks, dried fish, and the occasional highly volatile mammoth pelt. Grug was standing on his boulder, comfortably wealthy, eating a handful of premium berries.
The entire system was built on a foundation of trust and physical security. The Big Fire burned bright in the center of the clearing, keeping the ice at bay, and more importantly, keeping the predators away.

Then, everything fell apart in exactly three seconds.
It started with Lom.
Lom, the Mud-Person, was extremely jumpy on a good day. He was currently holding five premium mammoth pelts, hoping to sell them before the afternoon sun made them too sweaty. He was standing near the edge of the trading floor, looking out toward the dark treeline.
Suddenly, a squirrel—a very aggressive, slightly erratic squirrel—dropped from a pine branch, landed directly on Lom’s shoulder, screeched loudly, and bit his ear.
Lom panicked. He threw his pelts in the air and sprinted toward the center of the clearing, screaming at the top of his lungs, "Ahhh! Wolf! WOLF! IT HAS MY EAR! WOLF!"

In the Pleistocene epoch, the word "wolf" was not a market signal; it was an eviction notice from life.
The reaction on Cave Street was instantaneous and algorithmic. The human brain’s fight-or-flight response is the original high-frequency trading software.
Ugg, the Market Maker, who was currently holding a massive inventory of thirty pointy sticks and ten dried fish, did not wait to verify the information. "Wolf!" Ugg roared. He dropped his entire inventory, grabbed his massive club, and sprinted for the safety of his cave.
When the Market Maker abandons his post, liquidity drops to zero.
Thok, executing his Stop-Loss duties for a trader holding berries, heard "Wolf," dropped his oak stick, dropped the berries, and ran.
