Thénardier stared at the screen, his greed momentarily overcoming his fear. "Fifty grand? For that little rat? You know, mister, inflation is hitting the markets pretty hard right now. I think her contract is worth... a hundred grand."
Valjean moved faster than Thénardier’s eyes could track.
In a fraction of a second, Valjean crossed the room, grabbed Thénardier by the throat, and slammed him backward against the server racks. Sparks showered from the cheap wiring as the scammer gasped for air, his feet dangling off the linoleum floor. Madame Thénardier shrieked, dropping the gun in pure terror.

"I am not a market maker, Thénardier," Valjean whispered, his grip like a hydraulic vise. "I do not negotiate the spread. You will take the fifty thousand. You will sever the contract. If you ever speak her name again, I will return, and I will erase you from the physical world."
Valjean dropped him. Thénardier collapsed to the floor, coughing violently, terrified out of his mind. "Do it!" he croaked to his wife. "Sign the damn contract over!"
Two minutes later, the blockchain validated the transfer. The legal and digital ties binding Cosette to the Waterloo Trading Academy were permanently burned.

Valjean left the Thénardiers cowering by their terminals and walked down the narrow, flashing hallway to the server closet. The heavy door was locked from the outside. He grabbed the handle and simply shattered the locking mechanism with raw, brute force.
He opened the door.
Cosette was huddled in the corner, clutching her knees, terrified by the shouting and the sound of breaking metal. She looked up at the massive, bruised man standing in the doorway, blocking out the harsh fluorescent lights of the boiler room.

Valjean looked at the little girl. He saw Fantine’s eyes staring back at him. The cold, calculating algorithms of his mind went entirely quiet, replaced by a devastating wave of profound, human sorrow and absolute purpose.
Slowly, the giant of a man dropped to one knee, ignoring the pain in his bruised legs, bringing himself down to her eye level. He reached out a massive, scarred hand, keeping his movements incredibly gentle.
"Cosette," he said softly.

"Are... are you the ghost?" she whispered, her voice trembling. "Did you send the wire?"
"No, little one," Valjean replied, a gentle, melancholic smile touching his lips. "I am just a man who owed your mother a very great debt. And I have come to take you away from the screens."
Cosette looked at his hand. For the first time in her life, she didn't see a transaction, a demand, or a threat. She saw safety. She reached out and placed her tiny, freezing fingers into his massive palm.
Valjean wrapped his ruined wool coat around her trembling shoulders, picked her up effortlessly in his arms, and walked out of the Waterloo Trading Academy. He carried her into the freezing, rain-swept night, disappearing into the digital shadows, finally keeping his promise to the dead.

Chapter 14: The Exit Liquidity
The rain over the industrial sector of Montreuil-sur-Mer fell in heavy, freezing sheets, washing the neon reflections of the skyline into blurred streaks across the pavement. John Valjean moved through the shadows with the relentless, mechanical endurance of a man driven by absolute necessity. He carried Cosette entirely shielded against his chest, wrapped in the ruins of his bespoke wool coat. She weighed almost nothing, a terrifying testament to her years in the Thénardier boiler room.

They could not take the autonomous subways or hail a ride-share. Every public transit node in the city was equipped with thermal imaging and retinal scanners tied directly to the SEC’s federal database. By now, Valjean knew, Javert had initiated a Level 1 grid lockdown. The regulator’s algorithmic bloodhounds would be tearing through the blockchain, analyzing the mempool for any trace of the zero-knowledge privacy coins Valjean had used to buy the child’s freedom.
The transaction was technically untraceable, but Javert did not need to break the cryptography; he only needed to trace the physical IP handshake that occurred when Valjean plugged his Ledger into Thénardier’s terminal. The digital net was tightening, closing the physical radius around the boiler room byte by byte.

"Are the drones going to find us?" Cosette whispered into his collar, her voice muffled by the thick, wet wool. She was trembling, her eyes wide as she watched a pair of federal quadcopters sweep searchlights across a nearby overpass.
"They are looking for a ghost in the machine," Valjean replied softly, ducking into the pitch-black entrance of a decommissioned storm drain that bypassed the smart-city sensors. "But we are not in the machine anymore. We are in the physical world now. They cannot see us here."

They navigated the subterranean labyrinth for hours, moving entirely off the grid. Valjean relied on his encyclopedic knowledge of the city's analog infrastructure—the very infrastructure he had funded as Monsieur Madeleine—to stay beneath the radar. He guided them toward the Gorbeau sector, an abandoned, decaying district of legacy data centers that had been rendered obsolete by the cloud migration a decade prior.
Deep in the early hours of the morning, they emerged into a narrow, deserted alleyway. Valjean set Cosette down under the awning of a closed bodega. He reached into his pocket and produced something Cosette had never seen in her life: a physical, crumpled fifty-dollar fiat bill.

He slid the bill under the security grate to the terrified bodega owner, taking two hot empanadas, a bottle of clean water, and a thermal emergency blanket. There was no digital handshake. No data harvested. No ledger entry. It was absolute privacy.
He handed the warm food to Cosette. She stared at it, bewildered. In the boiler room, food was a transaction, a reward dispensed only when her fake engagement metrics hit a predefined quota.
