Edmond slid into Leclère’s still-warm chair, his fingers flying across the Bloomberg terminal.
"What are you doing, Dantès?" snapped a sharp, nasal voice.
It was Danglars, the Chief Risk Officer. Danglars was a man who traded purely on spreadsheets and internal politics, harboring a deep, simmering resentment for Edmond’s raw intuition.
"I'm saving the firm," Edmond said, his voice eerily calm as he canceled Leclère’s frantic stop-loss orders.

"Step away from that terminal! The prime broker is liquidating us. We take the forty million dollar hit and we survive to trade tomorrow. You don't have the authorization to—"
"If we take the hit, Morrel Capital is insolvent by noon," Edmond interrupted, pulling up the execution matrix. "The Japanese institutional algorithms are spoofing the top of the book. Look at the volume profile. It's fake liquidity. The second the London fix hits in exactly ninety seconds, the floor falls out. We don't liquidate. We double down. We flip short."
Danglars’ face went purple. "You’re talking about shorting fifty lots into a face-ripping rally! It's financial suicide! I am formally documenting this as rogue trading!"
"Document it," Edmond whispered.

The clock on the wall ticked to 10:59:00 AM.
Edmond initiated the sequence. He didn't just market-sell; he deployed a custom iceberg algorithm he had coded in secret, feeding massive sell orders into the dark pools in tiny, invisible fractions so the high-frequency bots wouldn't front-run him.
10:59:30 AM. The Geppy spiked another twenty pips. The unrealized loss on Morrel Capital’s screen flashed to negative fifty million. Danglars looked like he was going to vomit.
10:59:50 AM. The buyers vanished.

11:00:00 AM.
The London fix hit. The Japanese institutional spoof orders were canceled in a millisecond, leaving a massive vacuum of liquidity. The pound didn't just drop against the yen; it plummeted into the abyss.
On the screens of Morrel Capital, the sea of red instantly flashed a blinding, violent green.

The downward velocity triggered a cascade of stop-losses from retail traders, pushing the price lower, lower, lower. Edmond’s iceberg algorithm swallowed the panic selling, closing out the massive short position perfectly at the bottom of the wick.
The trading floor went dead silent.
The P&L on the master screen refreshed.
Net Profit: +$14,500,000.

Edmond exhaled, leaning back in the chair. He wiped a single bead of sweat from his temple.
The glass doors to the trading floor shattered the silence as they burst open. Pierre Morrel, the founder and CEO, stormed in. His suit was disheveled, his phone pressed to his ear. He looked at the paramedics wheeling Leclère away, then at the terminal, and finally at Edmond.
"The prime broker just called," Morrel said, out of breath. "They said we didn't just meet margin... we cleared their daily volume single-handedly. Leclère?"
"A minor coronary, sir," Danglars interjected quickly, stepping forward to claim proximity to the miracle. "A tragedy. But in the chaos, the risk desk managed to—"

"It was Dantès," a junior trader shouted from the back. "Edmond took the helm. He flipped the book short at the exact top."
Morrel walked over to Edmond’s desk, staring at the flashing green P&L. He placed a heavy, trembling hand on the young man’s shoulder.

"You saved my legacy today, Edmond. You saved everyone in this room's job." Morrel looked around the floor, his voice booming with absolute authority. "When Leclère recovers, he will retire with full honors. But as of this exact second, Edmond Dantès is the Head of Proprietary Trading at Morrel Capital."

A cheer erupted from the junior desks. Edmond smiled, a pure, unjaded expression of a young man whose entire life had just aligned perfectly.
In the reflection of the Bloomberg terminal, Edmond caught sight of Danglars. The Risk Officer was clapping, his mouth stretched into a tight, congratulatory smile. But his eyes were dead, calculating, and burning with a hatred that would soon tear Edmond's perfect world to shreds.

Chapter 2: The Quant and the Broker
The air inside Le Réserve, an ultra-exclusive cigar lounge buried three stories beneath the financial district, was thick with the scent of aged cedar and two-thousand-dollar scotch. It was the kind of room where global markets were quietly carved up away from compliance microphones.
Fernand Mondego stared into his lowball glass, watching the amber liquid swirl over a single sphere of ice. As an institutional broker for one of the city’s top routing firms, Fernand was wealthy, strikingly handsome, and draped in bespoke Italian wool. But tonight, his hands were shaking with a violent, unrestrained rage.
