Razor-Sharp Rejections (Naked Charting)

Without order flow tools, icebergs look like an unnaturally flat ceiling or floor on an M1 or M5 chart. Normal support and resistance zones are "fuzzy," with wicks piercing through as liquidity is tested. Icebergs create a hard stop. Price hits the exact same pip level multiple times and bounces instantly, creating a perfectly flat line of wicks.

The intraday rule for scalping these levels is to never front-run the iceberg. Wait for the aggressive side (the market order flow) to exhaust itself—visible when the tick volume suddenly drops at the level—and then enter in the direction of the hidden liquidity.

Cumulative Volume Delta on intraday timeframes (M1-M15) is an execution trigger, not a directional compass. Its primary value is exposing whether aggressive market orders are actually moving the price or just slamming into passive limit orders.

Optimal Intraday Settings

Session Resets: Never use continuous, multi-day CVD for scalping. Set the indicator to reset to zero at the start of major liquidity windows—specifically the Frankfurt/London crossover and the New York open. The delta from the Asian session is irrelevant to NY order flow.

Line vs. Candle Visualization: Plot CVD as a continuous line or cumulative histogram beneath your main chart. Avoid CVD candles on sub-M5 timeframes, as the noise obscures the macro divergence you are looking for.

Volume Data Source: If you are trading forex, standard broker tick volume is a proxy and often unreliable for CVD. Professional scalpers pipe in CME futures data (e.g., 6J for the Yen, 6E for the Euro) to get centralized, executed volume for their CVD calculations, executing the actual trade on their spot broker.

High-Probability CVD Practices

Trading Absorption (The Iceberg Bounce)

When price pushes into a known H4/D1 support zone and stops moving, watch the CVD line. If CVD continues to plummet (indicating heavy, aggressive market selling) but the price chart forms a flat floor, an institutional iceberg is absorbing the flow. Do not enter immediately. Wait for the CVD line to flatten out or tick slightly upward—signaling seller exhaustion—before entering long.

Spotting Exhaustion Divergence

If price makes a marginal higher high on the chart, but the CVD line makes a lower high, the new price high is not supported by aggressive market buying. It is likely a low-volume stop run hunting for liquidity. This structural divergence at a resistance level is a prime setup for a short fade.

Validating Breakouts

A legitimate breakout from a tight M15 consolidation must be confirmed by a vertical acceleration in CVD. If price breaks a resistance level but the CVD line is flat or dropping, it is a low-participation move designed to trap breakout traders. Fade the breakout the moment price closes back inside the range.

FTtrader, the description of intervention candles with no upper wick and one-way ticks is a useful checklist. For short-term traders the main question is less about recognising intervention and more about what to do with open positions when it starts. Writing that rule in advance, for example flatten anything in the affected pair at the first sign and do not re-enter for the rest of the session, removes the temptation to fight the move.
