He returned to the stump and handed Thok the stick. Thok was thrilled. "Grug best friend! Saved Thok long walk!"

"Anytime, Thok," Grug said, casually hiding the third fish behind his back. "Is just business."

Grug took a bite of the raw, frozen fish. It was the best thing he had ever tasted. It tasted like pure, unadulterated profit. He had discovered the spread, and he realized with absolute certainty: he was never going to lift a heavy grinding rock ever again.

Part 3: The First "Fur-ex" Market

Grug’s "middleman" business was booming. He had accumulated a respectable pile of fish, two pointy sticks, and a slightly used bone flute. But Grug was a visionary. He knew the local valley economy was too small. He needed foreign markets.

Across the Great Frozen River lived the Mud-People. The Mud-People were strange; they lived near a geothermal hot spring, which meant they didn't need thick fur, but it also meant they had access to bushes that grew sweet, squishy red lumps called "berries."

Grug’s tribe, the Ice-Eaters, had an abundance of heavy, incredibly warm mammoth pelts, but their diet consisted entirely of gray meat and beige roots. They were desperate for flavor. The Mud-People were desperate not to freeze to death the moment they stepped away from their hot spring.

It was the perfect setup for international trade. The only problem was the exchange rate.

Grug bundled up three premium mammoth pelts, threw them over his shoulder, and trudged across the frozen river. He found a shivering Mud-Person named Lom standing near the border, clutching a woven basket of berries.

"Greetings, Lom," Grug said smoothly. "I bring warmth. Thick Pelt. Premium grade. How many berry?"

Lom's teeth chattered. "Me give... ten berry for one Pelt."

Grug laughed, a deep, patronizing chuckle he had been practicing in his cave. "Ten berry? Lom, you insult the Pelt. The Pelt-to-Berry currency pair (PLT/BRY) is very volatile today. Look at sky."

Lom looked up. A massive, dark snow cloud was rolling over the mountain peaks. The temperature instantly dropped ten degrees. Lom shivered so violently he almost dropped his basket.

"Okay," Lom chattered, hugging himself. "Twenty berry! Twenty berry for Pelt!"

Fascinating, Grug thought. The exchange rate is floating. It’s entirely pegged to the local temperature and immediate physical suffering.

"Ah, but the wind is picking up," Grug noted, holding the pelt just out of Lom's reach. "Macro-economic conditions are worsening. It is now a Bear Market. Or rather, a Mammoth Market. Thirty berries."

"Take them!" Lom cried, shoving thirty berries into Grug's hands and snatching the pelt to wrap around his freezing shoulders.

Grug traded his remaining two pelts for sixty more berries. He carefully carried his squishy, highly perishable foreign currency back across the river to his own tribe.

When he returned to the Ice-Eaters, he sought out Ugg. Ugg was still chewing on the same femur from two days ago, looking thoroughly bored with his beige diet.

"Ugg," Grug announced. "I bring exotic foreign sweetness. Red berries from across the Great Ice."

Ugg dropped his bone. "Ooo. Ugg want. How much?"

"Well," Grug said, tapping his chin. "Import taxes, border risk, river-crossing tariffs... I will give you ten berries. For one Pelt."

Ugg eagerly threw a heavy mammoth pelt at Grug and greedily devoured the ten berries.

Grug walked away with his mind reeling. Let’s review the ledger: He started with three pelts. He crossed the river, got ninety berries. He crossed back, traded ten berries for one pelt. He could repeat this until he owned every pelt in the valley, keeping a massive surplus of berries for himself.

He didn't just invent a trade route. He had invented the Foreign Exchange. He was a Fur-ex trader.

The next morning, Grug dragged a large flat stone to the riverbank and used a piece of charcoal to draw a crude picture of a Pelt and a Berry, with a tally mark between them. The spread was astronomical, the regulation was non-existent, and Grug was about to become the richest man in the Pleistocene epoch.

Part 4: Cave Street

Grug’s Fur-ex arbitrage and middleman operations were wildly profitable, but they had one glaring logistical flaw: the commute.

Running back and forth between Ugg’s cave, Borg’s cave, and the Mud-People’s riverbank was ruining Grug’s knees. He was a financier now, not a marathon runner. Decentralized finance was simply too much cardio.

He needed a centralized exchange. A single, designated location where buyers, sellers, and people who just liked yelling could gather in one place.

Grug scouted the valley and found the perfect spot: a wide, flat clearing situated directly in front of the tribe's Great Communal Fire. It was warm, it had high visibility, and most importantly, it had a very large, slightly elevated boulder in the center. Grug immediately claimed this boulder.

The next morning, instead of running to his clients, Grug sent his newly hired intern, Thok (who was still very happy about the fish incident and willing to work for berries), to spread the word.

"Tell everyone," Grug instructed. "If you want trade, you come to the Big Fire when sun is highest. Do not bring heavy rocks to Grug’s cave anymore. My back hurts."

By high noon, a confused and heavily armed crowd had gathered. Ugg was there with a dripping haunch of meat. Borg had an armful of pointy sticks. Lom, the Mud-Person, had nervously crossed the river with a basket of berries, sweating profusely in his new mammoth pelt.

Grug climbed atop his boulder. He cleared his throat.

"Welcome," Grug shouted over the crackling fire, "to Cave Street."

The crowd blinked. Someone scratched their armpit.

"Here is how it works," Grug continued, pacing on the rock. "You do not walk across valley anymore. You stand here. You yell what you have. You yell what you want. I stand on this rock and point at you when you make a deal. For this incredible convenience, you give Grug one berry, or one small bite of fish, per trade. I call this the 'Because I Am Standing On The Big Rock' fee."

Ugg frowned. "Why Ugg give you bite of meat? Ugg can just yell at Borg himself."
