Gold is not a currency pair, even though it trades like one

Many forex scalpers add XAUUSD to the list because it moves a lot and the spreads look reasonable. It behaves very differently from a currency pair.

Daily ranges are large, often 20 to 40 dollars, and moves in a few seconds can be 2 to 5 dollars. The same percentage move in EURUSD would be a full day's range. Position size needs to account for that or an ordinary swing wipes out a stop.

Liquidity patterns also differ. Gold has its own fix times in London, heavy participation from futures traders in New York, and reaction to real yields in a way that currencies only partly share.

The spread on gold is also less stable. It can sit at 15 to 30 cents in calm periods and jump to a dollar during news. Per-pip thinking does not translate; a point on gold is not a pip on a currency.

For scalpers who enjoy it, treating gold as a separate market with its own calendar, sizing, and rules works far better than reusing a forex template.

A simple rule helps keep the two apart: size gold by its dollar risk, never by pip habit. A 10 dollar stop on gold with a given lot size can be five times the money risk of a 10 pip stop on EURUSD with the same lot, and the mistake only becomes visible after the first fast move.

The contract specification also differs by broker. One lot of gold can be 100 ounces at some brokers and 10 at others, and the spread is quoted in different units. Reading the specification before the first trade avoids an expensive surprise.

Gold also has its own sessions that matter. The London morning and the New York open tend to bring the best liquidity, while the hour after the Comex close can be unusually thin and jumpy.

How different do the gold results look from the currency pair results?
