Sound alerts: a better edge than another indicator

Visual attention is a scarce resource. Eyes can only look at one place, and a lot happens elsewhere on the screen. Sound can pull attention at the right moment without needing to look.

Practical uses include a tone when spread jumps above a threshold, a chime when price touches a key level, a different sound for a filled order or a rejected one, and a warning for upcoming news.

The setup is simple on most platforms and in many third party tools. The benefit is that attention can rest on the main chart while peripheral events announce themselves.

The risk is overdoing it. A cacophony of alerts becomes noise and gets ignored. A few well chosen sounds, each meaning something specific, work best.

Some traders also use a voice announcement for critical events like a lost connection, since it is hard to miss.

One caution: sounds can condition anxiety too. A harsh alarm that goes off on every spread spike trains the nervous system to tense up. Softer tones for information and a distinct sound for real problems work better.

Which alerts have proved the most useful, and which got turned off for being annoying?
