it wasnt the loss itself that annoyed me, it was that teh trade was definately avoidable.

That's the kind of loss worth turning into a written rule, because it can be removed completely rather than managed. A simple version for a funded account: no new entries from fifteen minutes before a red-folder release, and anything already open is either closed or has its stop well outside where a spread blowout can reach it. Plenty of firms allow news trading on paper, but the fill a spike gives you is the same whether it's allowed or not, and the cushion before a first payout is the last thing worth spending on it.
