First day back after a week off, easing in with small size and one setup

First day back after a week off, easing in with small size and one setup

I took a week away from the screens, and today is my first day back. I find that the first day after a break is one where I'm either too cautious or too keen, so I'm posting a plan to keep it balanced.

Size is half of normal. One setup only, the one I know best, which is the London range break with a retest on M5. I'm not trying to catch up on what I missed or make up for lost time. The market was there last week and will be there tomorrow.

Before the session, I'm reviewing what happened while I was away, mainly the levels. Last week's high and low, and where price closed on Friday. I'm marking them on the chart and writing a short note about the current structure.

After the first trade, win or lose, I'll reassess. If I feel rusty, I'll stop at one or two. If it feels normal, I'll go up to full size tomorrow. No rush. A smooth return is more valuable than a big first day.

The part I watch most on a first day back is my timing. After a break I tend to hesitate on entries and get in late, or the opposite, jump in before the candle closes because I am keen. Half size is there exactly for that. If my first trade feels clumsy, win or lose, that is my signal to stop and come back tomorrow rather than forcing a second one to prove something. The goal for today is just to feel normal again on the one setup I know best.

One thing I always do before the first day back is spend half an hour on replay or just scrolling through the last week on the chart, bar by bar, calling out what I would have done. It warms up the pattern recognition without any money involved. I also reread my own rules, which sounds silly, but after a week away I genuinely forget small things like the news filter times. The first day back is not the day to discover I forgot a rule. Better to refresh it on purpose before the open.

Half size and one setup is the right first day frame. The hidden risk after a week off is not the missing setups, it is the rust in timing and in small rules you think you still remember.

I would treat the first trade as a diagnostic even when it wins. If the entry was late, the stop was nudged, or the news filter was forgotten, that is a stop signal for the day regardless of P and L.

The replay warm up you mentioned is worth protecting on the calendar. Thirty minutes of scrolling last week with no money attached beats jumping straight into the London open cold.

Catching up on missed moves is the urge that ruins return days. The market will print another London range tomorrow, and the account does not owe you last week's range.

Do you raise size only after a clean first day? Or do you need two quiet sessions before full risk comes back?

Half size is worth defining as half risk rather than half the lots. Volatility can shift a lot in a week away, and the stop on the same setup may not be the width it was.

Say the normal plan is 1 percent of 10,000 on a 10 pip stop, which is 1 lot. If the range break now needs a 15 pip stop, half the old lots is 0.5 lot and risks 75 dollars, which is 0.75 percent, while half risk is 50 dollars and about 0.33 lot.

A week off that spans a clock change has its own trap. From Monday 26 October the London open is 9am Lagos instead of 8am, so the range the setup depends on forms an hour later than habit expects.

Anyone returning that Monday should move the alarms and the news filter times before the session, not after the first odd looking candle. The levels marked from last week stay the same, only the clock around them moves.

On the step back to full size, a fixed ladder is easier to keep than a feeling. One version is 0.5 percent on day one, 0.75 after one clean session, and 1 percent after two clean sessions in a row.
