Rather than watching the same pairs all day, some scalpers keep a roster: which pairs are allowed in each session, based on where liquidity and cost are best.
Example roster for a UK-based scalper:
Asia (00:00–07:00 UK):
- USDJPY, AUDUSD, AUDJPY, gold.
- Not allowed: EURGBP, EURCHF, GBP crosses (wide spreads, little movement).
London (07:00–12:00 UK):
- EURUSD, GBPUSD, EURGBP, EURJPY, gold.
- Not allowed: AUDNZD and other quiet Asia crosses.
NY overlap (12:00–16:00 UK):
- EURUSD, USDJPY, USDCAD, gold, indices if traded.
- Not allowed: EURGBP after 15:00 (London closing).
Building your own:
1. Record spread and 15-minute range per pair per hour for a couple of weeks.
2. Keep only pairs where range/spread is above a threshold in that session.
3. Write the roster down and stick it near the screen.
It reduces watchlist clutter and prevents trades on pairs at the wrong time of day.
