Kitchen timer between trades to break click chains

Post by LondonScalper »

Kitchen timer between trades

My worst habit was not size — it was click chains. One scratch, immediate re-entry, second scratch, then a “make it back” market order. The chart looked busy; the journal looked stupid.

I put a cheap kitchen timer next to the mouse. After any exit (win or loss):
  • Start 3 minutes (London) / 5 minutes (overlap if spreads are lively)
  • Hands off one-click — flatten hotkeys covered with a sticky if needed
  • Use the pause to mark the chart and write one line: why that trade, why next would be different
If the timer feels unbearable, that is the signal I was about to overtrade. On quiet mornings I still use 90 seconds — the point is a forced gap, not meditation.

Does a hard pause work for you, or do you prefer a max-trades-per-hour cap instead? I found the timer cheaper than another indicator and harder to argue with.

Both, because they catch different things. The timer stops the instant re-entry; an hourly cap (four for me) stops the slower version where you sit out the pause and click anyway.

One change made the pause more useful: the next entry has to be a pending order set during the timer, never a market click afterwards. If I can't define level and stop inside three minutes, there was no trade. The "make it back" order is always a market order, so that kills it too.

And yes to a physical timer. Starting one on the phone is how I ended up reading headlines mid-pause.

I tried the timer for a while and found the length mattered less than which exits trigger it. A fixed 3 minutes after every exit felt like a tax on good trades, so I started skipping it after winners, and the click chains came straight back.

Looking at the journal, my worst sequences started after a win about as often as after a loss. A clean 6 pip winner made the next entry feel free, and that was the one taken without a level.

So now the timer runs after every exit, but its length depends on the last two trades. One loss or one win gives 3 minutes, two losses in a row give 15, and after a third I am done for the morning.

The number I track to see whether it works is simple. I count trades opened within 5 minutes of the previous exit, and over a month it dropped from roughly one in four of my entries to almost none.

PropScalpDesk's pending order rule fits neatly with this. Writing the level and stop during the pause is the useful part, and on the days I could not find one, the timer just ran out and I closed the platform.
