How to Read a Forex Quote and Calculate a Pip

How to Read a Forex Quote and Calculate a Pip

A forex quote can look confusing at first. Let's break it down.

Example: EURUSD = 1.0850

- The first currency (EUR) is the base currency
- The second (USD) is the quote currency
- The price means one euro costs 1.0850 US dollars

What is a pip?
A pip is the standard unit of price movement. For most pairs, a pip is the fourth decimal place (0.0001). For JPY pairs, it's the second decimal place (0.01).

If EURUSD moves from 1.0850 to 1.0860, that's a 10 pip move.

What is a lot?
A lot is the size of your position:

- Standard lot: 100,000 units of the base currency
- Mini lot: 10,000 units
- Micro lot: 1,000 units

Pip value (approximate):
For a standard lot of EURUSD, one pip is about $10. For a mini lot, about $1. For a micro lot, about $0.10.

Example trade:
Buy 0.10 lots of EURUSD (a mini-ish size, equal to 10,000 units) at 1.0850. Price moves to 1.0870. That's 20 pips. Profit is about 20 x $1 = $20.

Tips:

1. Check the pip value in your platform before trading
2. Use a calculator for position sizing
3. Remember that JPY pairs and gold use different conventions

Understanding pips and lots is the foundation for measuring risk. Don't place your first trade until you can calculate these without hesitation.

Worked pip example for JPY pairs since they're different. On USDJPY at 149.50, a pip is 0.01, so a move to 149.70 is 20 pips. On EURUSD a pip is 0.0001. Mixing those up is a sizing error I see newer traders make all the time. Another source of confusion is that most brokers now show an extra decimal, sometimes called a pipette. EURUSD might show 1.08505, where the last digit is a tenth of a pip. When your platform says a stop is 150 points away, that's usually 15 pips, not 150. Check how your platform counts before setting stops, especially when you copy settings from a video or another trader.

Another common confusion is fractional pips, the fifth decimal on many platforms. EURUSD at 1.08505 means half a pip above 1.0850. If your broker shows five digits, a 10 pip stop is 100 points on the platform, so double-check what you're entering. The same applies to yen pairs, where USDJPY at 150.255 means the third decimal is the fractional pip. Many EAs and calculators ask for stops in points, not pips, so a setting of 20 meant as pips gives you a 2 pip stop. When you start on a new platform, place a test order on demo and check the stop distance matches what you intended.
