A trade journal that's missing key data fields isn't really a journal — it's a partial record that will fail you exactly when you need it most, which is during a serious performance review trying to identify what's actually working and what isn't.
Here's the minimum field list worth including on every single entry, without exception: date and time of the trade, currency pair, entry price, exit price, stop-loss level, position size, resulting reward-to-risk ratio, final outcome (win, loss, or breakeven), the specific setup type or strategy used, and a screenshot of the chart at the time of entry.
Each of these fields serves a specific analytical purpose down the line. The setup type field, for example, lets you eventually break down your performance by strategy — discovering, perhaps, that your support/resistance bounce setups have a 65% win rate while your VWAP reversion setups are barely breaking even, information you simply cannot extract from a journal that just logs "won" or "lost" without any categorization.
Anything less than this level of detail, and you can't meaningfully analyze patterns later — you're left with vague impressions instead of actual data. It takes perhaps sixty extra seconds per trade to log this properly. Across hundreds of trades over months of trading, that small consistent investment becomes the single most valuable resource you have for actually improving.

Re: The Minimum Fields Every Trade Journal Entry Needs
Hello Fairman,
i remember once i was newbie in this business, i tracked very detailed track rekord.
After several years i have found, that i do not need it, because market changes a lot and what works is to invest your time into looking for opportunities and checking what is going on in the world.
Forex is very complex, so it is better to be prepared.

It is very complex and you have to understand what is and what is not important.
Plus you have to understand yourself, how will you react under pressure.

Nowdays after 30 years of trading i do not collect lot of data, i just simply see that in charts.

yes, you are right. From my point of view, technical analysis can show you, where is good to paste your stop loss, how many pips it is possible to make by some trade etc.
Itself will not work.
You can try it by go back in time in any timeframe and try to trade by moving only charts to the future and decide, which trade you will take.

Yeah that’s true, backtesting is great but one can’t backtest if the chart has already played outFTtrader wrote: Sun Aug 30, 2026 9:27 pmHi Fairman,Fairman wrote: Sun Aug 23, 2026 11:09 pmThat’s true, forex is very complexHansFX wrote: Sat Aug 22, 2026 12:29 pm Hello Fairman,

i did not know about that replay from Trading view, thanks for information. Did you test it? How does it work?
I programmed something very similar in MT4 years ago. But what i have found, that plain charts do not work it self, you have to have informations
about the news, geopolitics and risks in world. At least that work for me.
